The fact that you are informed as you are and speaking on it is a sign of things changing. I'm 50, I've been pushing democratic socialism for over 20 years. I am seeing it more and more

Excellent presentation.

It should be made very clear that fascism is a perversion of socialism in a few ways. Further muddying the water is the political party you’d rather *not see* that used “socialist” as part of their name. They did so as a ploy to appeal to the general public and in spite of being rampant capitalists.

The core definition of fascism is when the state and corporations are the same entity.

The core definition of socialism is that the general public owns the means of production.

While the first is inherently both economic and political, as you pointed out the second is only economic (although it would almost necessarily be part of a democratic system of government, but not always, our military is an example of an authoritarian socialist system). That is one difference.

The other is more important in many ways. Fascism is top-down, socialism is bottom-up.

Note that in the core definition, the business structure of corporation was specifically listed. That is an inherently authoritarian, rigidly structured system of business, and the epitome of capitalism. From that stems the far right nature of fascism, as well as the authoritarianism and adherence to tradition. The other portions common to fascism, the nationalism, homophobia, conformity, and misogyny also stem from it, as brand loyalty and maximizing production at the expense of the workers magnified to the level of law.

The difference more or less comes down to who owns what. In socialism, the general public owns the means of production. In fascism, the means of production owns the general public.

I’m not certain there’s any one ism that gets everything right. I take ideas that have practical applications to making the world a better place for all its inhabitants and I throw out what I find is objectionable for the benefit of humans in general. I believe a lot of what Scandinavians are doing works exponentially better than the American model of all power to the richest and the rest get to scramble for scraps and work until we pass on. Every society has to make adjustments based on needs and cultural influences and available resources. For instance the fact that homelessness is such a problem in the richest country in the world should be a source of embarrassment for Americans everywhere. Also our alarming rate of incarceration of the poor and intentionally encouraging racism to keep working people divided. Sorry I’ll stop ranting. America has potential but not until we surmount the greed 😢
