I’m Swedish and lived 9 years in Istanbul. Ümraniye is one of the most conservative, ugly and depressing areas of the city, and very far from any interesting sights. Don’t go there. Küçükyalı is a nicer residential area, but still far away on the Asian side, away from the main sights. Not recommended. The last hotel, in Bakırköy, is in an area of no interest to tourists at all. I used to work there and has a friend who lives near the Titanic, which is a depressing hotel. Just book a stay at one of the boutique hotels in Sultanahmet, where you’re steps from the beautiful sights and monuments, and nearly always have a Bosphorus view! I lived there for 4 years, so I know what I’m talking about. Jus5 be careful of scams, but if you’re an intelligent person you won’t fall for them.
