There was this one chick in my grade that 'developed' faster than the others and we were friendly. I was interested, and I made her laugh, often. Low and behold, transfer student comes in. He was taller, smoother, and better-looking than I was. One day, we're all sort of hanging out, he's saying the most inane things and she's laughing her ass off. I don't remember what I said, but I interjected with something I thought was crazy funny. The guy laughs uproariously, she looks at me like I'm weird. I told her: "you would've laughed if he'd said that same thing, " to which she scoffed and stopped talking to me from that moment on.

She was a hanger-on of his for like 2 years.

Related story. For the years we were friends, and through our dating and engagement, my wife thought I was hilarious. We got married and that quickly changed; suddenly she was in full cringe mode or just plain irritated by my sense of humor all the time. I started to suspect that the previous years had all been an act somehow. After nearly 4 years of marriage, we make the decision to have a baby, so she goes off birth control. Within a week, she was laughing at my jokes again and seemed genuinely glad to be around me more often. We did the "math" and realized that she started birth control a mere 6-8 weeks prior to our wedding--no we didn't have sex prior to our wedding night--and everything clicked. The more she thought about it the more she realized those 4 years she was constantly joyless and irritable and generally miserable. She never went back on birth control, and after 3 kids and 12+ years, I can still make her laugh. Most of the time.
