You Can No Longer Buy Kindle eBooks on Android | Good News

Kindle has actually disabled purchasing on the AMAZON APP for Android. You will no longer be able to buy ebooks through the app. Instead, you will have to use the internet browser to visit the Amazon website, find a book you want, buy it and then sync it with the app. This is occurring due to new Google Billing changes. Audible disabled audiobook purchases a couple of weeks ago.

I would expect these pricing schemes from Apple, but I was actually surprised to see Google do it.

I hate it when I am locked into a particular ecosystem or device this makes it expensive. Also, think it might be bad for many people in this industry. Not good for the environment if I need to buy another device to do the same thing I used to do on one device.

I think Google needs to rethink. I pay Amazon straight from my bank. I'll just stop using the app on my tablet. I don't like to be manipulated big business. I'm going off Google for various reasons. They are too greedy and manipulative, one of the reasons I no longer use Apple products, their policy of controlling what you can put on your machine. I'll just buy via my Kindle Oasis, until I buy another ereader, probably a Boox.

not a big deal. Just use a browser to buy your books.

I rarely do in-app purchases for audible/e-books. I do most of those on the audible website on my desktop computer or on the Amazon site because I find searching for a specific book or discovering a new book/writer easier. I do understand it will be inconvenient for people that are used to doing the in-app purchases.

That doesn't make sense, if I buy a couch on Amazon through Amazon app does Google get 30%? I don't think they do. So how is buying a book different? How does this effect Walmart grocery pickup android app, does Google get 30% of my grocery order money?

Hm,
Will Huawei become the only Android tablets on which you can buy ebooks?
How ironic.

Thank you for your very clear information above. From my personal viewpoint: just forget Amazon-Kindle device. Let them (Google + Amazon) suffer the consequences of their greed. Other alternate multi-platform will emerge soon enough. I found Kindle too limited for other countries and languages (and economic situation to purchase too limited now and expensive devices). It's just too much hassle not worth it. Enough!...

I'll be the minority then and say it is great news. The more people get used to not just purchasing within the app, the greater likelihood they might choose other retailers. This borderline monopoly FAANG has on books is obscene.

That was the biggest advantage of android. You had such freedom. Why would they limit people.

Google is doing the same thing that Apple has done for years. Amazon ‘pulled’ this feature because they don’t want to pay Apple/Google 30%, and I don’t blame them. Android users can do like iOS users now and buy in the browser, and then access the book in your Kindle app. It’s only a minor inconvenience, and it’s dishonest & click-baity to name your video “You Can No Longer Buy Kindle eBooks on Android” - you can totally still buy Kindle books on android - in the browser! Open up Chrome, or whatever browser you use on Android, sign in to Amazon, and buy the Kindle book. It really is that simple.

The platform operators demanding 30% is anti competitive, and they should be fined and made illegal.

Yes, they are entitled to a cut, but 30% is extortionate. An analogy is the government (who operate the roads) demanding 30% of all revenue from taxies and buses, on top of road taxes they already charge.

Hi, Thanks for the explanation, I have only just this week (18/01/23) had my android device disabled in purchasing Kindle eBook's. I did read about this last year, however as my android device carried on working (buying books) I thought that this had been resolved between Amazon and Google, obviously not !.. I spent about 30 mins checking my settings and payments etc until I checked the web for answers.
It has taken a while for Amazon to disable this in app store purchasing and I haven't received any notification from them that this will be happening.
I understand why it has happened and I don't blame them for doing it, however a simple on site explanation would have been welcomed, (unless I have missed it). Although I have checked their site and cant find anything in relation to Android tablets not being able to purchase books.
I have a Fire device and that works fine, so one device for reading and one for messing around on.
Incidentally, once I have purchased the books on the Fire OR my pc, I can then access them on my Android device.
So please don't start buying other devices to purchase books, just use somebodies pc.
Thanks for your time.

This “pay for paying” is medieval. A payment service should be mandatory from any OS, it shouldn’t be a fee. Rulers should act now.

About audioble, lately i noticed in the app they switched from the old one to the google pay one and it is more expensive (to buy 3 more credit points) to cover the difference with the 30% tax

I only make purchases through their websites. I don’t think I’ve ever bought anything through the apps 🤔🧐

Buy the books on your computer and just keep reading them on your portable device.

I literally just bought a book through my kindle app on my android phone today. I don't know where your info came from but I haven't had an issue.

Serious question, can't you just buy them on a computer? 😅 (I have never bought books on Kindle).
