Also special thanks to Mr. Steve. The duplicant "Quin" was supposed to be called Mr. Steve.

Result:

=> 12 Pacu can supply 6 Duplicants on Pacu fillet
=> 12 Pacu can supply 9 almost 10 Duplicants on cooked fish
=> 12 Pacu can supply 18 Duplicants on raw egg
=> 12 Pacu can supply 33 Duplicants on Omelette + cooked fish

What's really interesting is the fry egg to omelet change. Omelets are the only food you can cook with ambient heat. So you could fully automate the kcal production by putting the eggs in a storage bin inside of a hot room, and get more kcal out of them then meat would give.

Unpopular opinion: It was a good thing. Personally, I would have them drop more food depending how often you feed them.

Hey, flaming_couches here, creator of the steam guide you mentioned at the start. Nice to see it getting some use in some of your own experiments, and thanks for the shoutout!

Definitely see where you're coming from with starvation ranches being inefficient, but I don't know that I would go as far as to say they are not still viable. One primary advantage to them is that they overall use less duplicant labor to be 100% sustainable, since you don't have to think as much about feeding them sustainably. Depending on your feeding setup, a starvation ranch may actually take up less net space than a breeding ranch design would, although don't quote me on that since I haven't done much research into sustainably feeding them.

Definitely useful stuff though, very insightful! I'll definitely be thinking about it next time I need to build a ranch, although my starvation design is enough for my latest colony right now.

I actually really like that the update pushed Pacu into being incredibly viable Mushroom Quiche generators instead of meat factories, ESPECIALLY on swampy worlds.

For 12 Dupes:
- 15 Mushrooms
- 2 Waterweeds
- 3 Pacu
- 3 Pufts

The 3 Pufts give 135kg of Slime/cycle, 60kg goes to the mushrooms and 75kg goes to a distiller to turn into 25kg of Algae for the Pacu.

This setup feeds 11 dupes on it's own, then you can add lettuce later for the extra morale and calories. All you need is 10kg/cycle of Saltwater and 1kg/cycle of Bleach Stone, plus the seeds.

So much better for game performance than 200 pacu sitting in a single tile lmao

Elegant work Luma. Just due to the amount of Pacu required to keep one dupe fed has made it so I always want to move on to a "better" food source, just to keep my game running decently. I really wish they changed Pacu so 1 Pacu ranch could feed more than 1 dupe and they made Pacu harder in other ways to mitigate the buff. They really need to do more optimization on critters like making them not make any unnecessary movements if they are not on screen and revealed.

I don't like having a million dupes (I pretty much stop at 30 max) so the setup I've been using still works for me. It's a breeder box with 2 tame pacu (big enough that an egg does not cause any problems for the second), and then the eggs get sucked up into a spot between the breeders and a single liquid square for all the excess pacu. Doors open or lock based on if the breeders need replacements or not.
I guess that originally the ones starving in the corner at least gave me an egg before they died, but that always left me with a surplus of food that just got wasted.

Granted, the pacu ranching is not my only source of food. It was supplementary to the Hatches and whatever plants I had around.

the only thing I care is pacu's diet has significantly reduced to 7.5kg algae per cycle. So I can farm them with easiest setup as possible and feed a couple of wild pufts enough to maintain the algae supply. Easy life.

Mirror the door mechanism from setup 2 to other side, keep only 1 or 2 egg/ fish at each side to refil, dump rest to 1 tile of water. Should be efficient enough. My brute force solution for carnivore by cycle 70 was: 96 tiles of water, pacus contained in 1 tile by 3 mesh tiles, 12 pacus in tile. 14 000kcal for 100kg/cycle of algae is still OP imho.

I've always just had a body of water with as many as it can handle and used them as supplementary food as it's so easy to do food in this game.

I "think" you could put the storage bins outside the water on top of the right wall of each pen so the loader can grab it when the door is open.

* Pacu eat 0.333kg per cycle (1kg/cycle for 3 pacu)
* Live for 25 cycles (25kg of food for 3pacu living 25 cycles)
* The feeder holds 200kg (enough for 24 pacu lifetimes)
* The door will be open 24 times to replace dead pacu before the food runs out (8 times if the deaths are all synchronised)
* The sweeper can move 1000kg in a single sweep

One sweep should be enough to refill the feeder from the external bin and the sweeper will have 8-24 chances before the pacu starve even if the door is only open for a second.

I'm sad to see the viability of pacu starvation ranches go, honestly. I think I'd probably still set some up, but your calculations on how their food production compared to just feeding them are very convincing honestly.

This design is brilliant. I have it in use in my current game. I have some sweepers at the top for the egg shells which are linked to a cycle sensor so they just pick up when my dupes are sleeping so as to minimise the draw of power from the grid. Thanks!
