Among Us and The Art of Lying to Your Friends

One of my favorite types of games are ones where I get to lie to my friends, and, most recently, I have been completely swept away by the Among Us train. I revel in icing people in electrical and pinning the vote on my poor, unsuspecting friends who deserve better. In this I look a bit at why these kinds of games are so special, how I play them, and also the reason I think Among Us has exploded in popularity and will continue to be popular and fun to play for a long while. So, this is my look at Among Us and the art of lying to your friends.

Honestly, learning that Razbuten plays board games is an amazing addition to the lore

With games like this, my brother always does the “I did it, it was me, vote for me” even if it wasn’t him, and it works extremely well because nobody ever believes it’s actually him anymore.

Edit: So, I said unmercilessily when it would have been better to say mercilessly or unapologetically, BUT, as it turns out, unmercilessly (which is obsolete as fuck) also means mercilessly (it is some inflammable, irregardless bullshit) so please stop making fun of me and accept that I am a literary genius who is using old English. Thank you, now for the post:

Thanks for watching! I have a second video coming out this month (wow raz you are really spoiling everyone!), so be on the look out for that. I have been having a ton of fun with Among Us, so I hope you all enjoy this one. Uh normally I plug my Twitch and Patreon here, but I imagine you already know about those, so instead I am going to plug nothing and just ask, "how are you doing?"

It sucks there's no friend system in this game. doppio, if you're reading this, you were the pink dude with a baloon on your head this morning, I was the black one called comumerdu. One of the few reasonable people I found in this game

I never really thought about the "lying to my friends part" since it was just a game, but you made me think. Now I'm both worried and looking forward to my new life as a contract killer!

As someone who had played quite a bit of mafia and one night werewolf, what I love about these games is playing them in waves. They aren’t meant to be the first choice every time but instead are there for someone to recommend for one long night

The typical Among Us match:
"who?"
"who"
"?"
"purple"
"PURPLE! HE KILLED RED IN FRONT OF ME!"
"nah, I was with orange the whole time"
"cyan is sus"
"nott me"
"skip"
"Hey guys, I'm new to the game, how do I go into vents like yellow did?"

"lol"

I remember playing among us with a friend in a random lobby (ofc we didn’t cheat, we only talked during meetings and not while you were dead) and I was imposter. No-one saw me kill anyone, and I killed them quite slowly, and my fried wasn’t sus of me at all. It was the last 3, and I told him that I saw him vent. Ofc he trusted me, so we voted him off and I won. He next round he got imposter, ran up to me right next to everyone and killed me, and somehow didn’t get voted off until the final 4, even though 3 people saw him kill me. Wh definitely have different approaches.

I love how the answer to your question of "Should I want to be good in a game that revolves around lying" being basically "No, but it's just so much fun!". I'm really uncomfortable by the premise of these kind of games; training you to lie your way through things. But I do see the appeal. I think it's neat how you hit on both those notes.

*Crewmate #1:* The Impostor has already breached our defenses. You've seen what he's done to our colleagues, and worst of all, he could be ANY one of us. He could be in this very room. He could be you, he could be me! He could even be-

*_*Crewmate #1 gets Mass voted for Ejection*_*

*Other Crewmates:* Watch, the text will say _"Crewmate #1 is an Impostor"_ aaaany second now..

*The text:* Crewmate #1 was not an Impostor

I agree with you that playing with your friends is more fun, but playing with other people is a good way to get to know them if you don’t. Yesterday I joined two among us games (one in your server) and I feel more a part of those two communities than I did before. I guess these hidden role games have more uses than one, at least for me.

I wouldn't say it's bad to be a "good liar" but only becomes bad depending on how you use or abuse that skill.

As I always say to people when they get accused "defend, don't deny"

It's weird, my trusted friends don't notice the subtle changes in my voice when i'm the impostor, but this friend that i barely know noticed that i tend to laugh when nervous and many more patterns while my trusted friends fall for my tricks every time... should i be flattered by this friend or angry at my trusted ones?

Honestly I think having the social skills that among us teaches is very good. Knowing how to lie, while maybe not the best look, is still a important skill to have. I view it less as lying (in this scenario) than it is acting, playing the part.

As someone who loves trustlikes whilst also being "scarily good at them" (an actual quote from my friends), playing with really good friends has always resulted in nobody being able to trust me and immediately turning to accusations without any proper evidence. This often ruins the fun when I am actually the "traitor" AND it makes me an easy scapegoat for the actual traitor when I am innocent, which is why I prefer games where you can generate plausible deniability more reliably via the performance of tasks.

I am aware that being good at, and enjoying these types of games is likely a red flag to many people, but I also get consistently called nice by the same friends I backstab (despite my refusal to accept said claims) so I guess that means I am not a complete lunatic?

Though I'll never forget the time I was able to fool a table of 20 people into thinking I was innocent by perfectly replicating a "sickly look" I acquired during a previous game, specifically as a result of being accused I was a traitor when 100% innocent. >:D
