No they kept giving it to your brother that's their problem.

The funny thing about dynamics like these, is that over time the parents create distance with the responsible child and protect the favorite. But as when they age, the favorite is too spoiled to take care of them and the responsible one, is too resentful to care.

You are not wrong, they were very wrong.

I think justice has been served. A 12 year old vehicle they must really like it.

NTA. They had the opportunity to get a nice newer vehicle but they didn't agree to the terms. End of discussion.

You did the right thing. You sound like the only adult! Respect. I once sold a car to my sister for a nominal fee, it caused huge family rows as I was told I should have given it as a gift. Never again….

They are not wrong saying once you give to them they can do with what they want. BUT you are absolutely in your right to do with your property what you want.

Generosity just creates entitlement. Good on you for just doing whats right for you.

No you’re not wrong. The cheek of those people to donate your gift to enrich your brother. It sounds like they’re actually jealous of your success versus his stagnancy and are enriching him with your gifts. You realize that you’re probably not in their will and that he’s been receiving generous gifts from them forever.

It was generous of you to give them your old cars. They felt entitled to something that wasn’t theirs. It should be a nice thing and not something expected of you

Thing is, you dont have a right to control what happens to a gift after it's given. But you're right not to give them another! Past behaviour predicts the future, and they told you themselves. Yep, you did treat them like children. Then you did the right thing 😊 well done x

They were right, once it is their vehicle they can do whatever they wanted. So, when they get a vehicle that’s what they can do, however- you are neither obligated or required to give them a car. Both these things are true at same time

A 12 year old Kia? That’s totally fine. I drive a 16 year old Ford, and it still runs smooth. 12 years is nothing. If it still works, it’s good.

I'm laughing at the parent's attitude of entitlement...they are fortunate that the son was giving them any vehicle....Bravo to the son for choosing to HELP His OWN SELF... NTAH

Gifts are gifts what that person does with it after it leaves your hands isn't your business. If you have a heavy heart, based on past experience, that they won't take care of it the way you want, I ABSOLUTELY support selling the truck for your own use of the money.

You are not your parents car dealer. You are not a charity. You did the right thing.

Lmao I thought they said it was the owners choice?

You're absolutely right. That was a courtesy you gave them and a privilege that they took advantage of

I feel this story I went through the same thing with my sister and my brother who are both pretty much deadbeats and for some reason always have been able to live a good life taking advantage of others including my parents . My parents would always ask me for money and I would always give it to them and then I realized that they weren't using it for their own use they were giving it to my siblings and that was pretty much infuriating but you know what my parents love them and I was like okay if I give you money I don't want you to just giving it to my brother and sister but they still did and I just lived with it and ate my anger .

They gave it to the brother so he could make a profit on it. They were all abusing OP's generosity while he was trying to do them a favor. Also, then babying the brother isn't helping him.
