Professor Ron Ahnen Discusses Governor's Death Penalty Moratorium

Saint Mary's Politics Professor Ron Ahnen appeared on the KTVU Mornings on 2 Saturday edition on March 16 to discuss Gov. Gavin Newsom’s moratorium on California's death penalty. The executive action, issued on March 13, 2019, suspended executions in the state while Newsom is governor. Prof. Ahnen teaches courses on human rights and prison reform, such as "The Politics of Incarceration." A prisoner’s rights advocate, Ahnen is also the former president of California Prison Focus - a human rights advocacy group working to abolish the state’s prison system in its present condition. During his live five minute discussion on KTVU, Ahnen spoke about the ethical and moral quandary he believes Gov. Newsom is in because of the governor’s beliefs about the inequities in the death penalty as a criminal deterrent.
