Definitely held it’s own during testing and No leaks were detected

Tunnelbear uses openvpn by default paired with AES-256.

I think it’s worth noting that they were audited by Cure 53 back in 2017, which is like a Cyber Security firm. They found several critical and high severity findings but tunnelbear addressed these issues over the next 6 months to make sure they had a better level of security.

Then later on that same year in 2017, Hackernoon did a deep dive into the TunnelBear code to see if there were any notable vulnerabilities and they couldn’t find anything.

So basically, TunnelBear does come through as being an extremely safe and secure VPN to use.

STANDOUT FEATURES

A few of the standout features you get with TunnelBear is a Kill Swith, Anonymous IP and up to 5 simultaneous connections.

GhostBear is an additional feature that tries to hide the fact that you’re using a VPN. It’s actually good enough to fool many businesses and governments but unfortunately not all of them.

Keep in mind that it does slow down your speed a bit so i wouldn’t leave it on all the time.

EASE OF USE

TunnelBear is also pretty easy for anyone to use.

And while it lacks some advanced features, this does make it easier to use for anyone who’s new to using VPNs.

TORRENTING

Regarding torrenting, tunnelbear used to not allow it. But that seems to have all changed. Now TunnelBear does allow both torrenting and the use of the TOR network (which was confirmed by one of their representatives).

A lot of users like to use TOR in conjunction w/ a VPN to maximize their anonymity.

But keep in mind that your speeds may be severely decreased while using it.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Unfortunately in the customer service department, TunnelBear still doesn’t offer live chat.

But at least their ticket support time can be pretty quick, like within 2 hours. But they like to allow up to 48 hours just in case.

But responses are at least good and have some life and personality to them. So while I’d definitely prefer live chat support, at least their responses to help tickets are good.

BIGGEST DOWNSIDES TO TUNNEL BEAR?

Unfortunately this VPN is slow.

Speeds dropped an average of about 50%.

Although this isn’t the worse I’ve seen, it’s pretty bad by today’s standards.

Also, TunnelBear can’t handle unblocking Netflix and it doesn’t support installing their VPN software directly on your router...
