Welcome to our what to sow in January video from our allotment gardening for beginners UK channel. Sowing and growing seeds in January is a choice that we make to spread the seed sowing season out. Growing from seeds in January requires a heated propagator, our one is in the link below. A heated propagator helps you sow seeds indoors ready for planting in your UK allotment or vegetable garden.

Allotment gardening in the UK and sowing in January can be challenging for a new allotment holder or new gardener so take it easy and don't start off lots of seeds at once. A gardeners biggest challenge is often keeping the seedlings going and finding space for them before the weather warms up in spring. Growing your own food requires you to extend the seasons so investing in a propagator and a good greenhouse or potting shed is essential.

A vegetable garden will be full of life once the weather warms up so we are using the winter to prepare ourselves for a veg patch full of food by starting now. Growing some sprouting seeds or micro greens is a great way to keep putting our own food on the plate even while the weather is cold.

If you want pea shoots plant dried peas from the supermarket - super cheap. A box is usually around a pound and lasts for ever.

Interesting to know that there are so many things that can be planted in January. Good idea about the heated propagator - thanks.

Well done Susanne, so much to gain. Times and weather has changed since I started growing nearly 60 years ago. We can have veg etc growing on our plots all year now what with all the new varieties that are available to us as growers. Its not the seeds that are at fault as some say its the sowing time, incorrect temps, incorrect watering and sowing medium. I have a friend who sows onions boxing day and has done for over 40 years, she always has an amazing crop, its because she chooses the correct variety for sowing at that time and that's the key, "the correct variety" It also enables succession sowings. Wishing you a very successful 2025 growing season and great to see that you are not a fair weather grower and able to get the maximum from your plot. 🙂

i love your down to earth approach. Im all for reusing things and doing things as cheaply as possible. Im just refreshing my brain for starting my peppers again and found you. I started peppers quite late last year and used it as my practice year. I grow them for my guinea pigs so i dont have to wait for them to ripen but i still could have done a lot more. I will be starting mine indoors on the 2nd. I wont be topping my peppers this year either, our growing season isnt long enough

Because of space and it being so cold and dark, I am going to wait at least a couple of weeks before sowing anything, but appreciate the advice of choosing the right variety for sowing in the middle of winter😊

Cracking straight on for the new year happy growing season. I also grow roma tomatoes they are prolific and always produce before blight hits. Will be making a lasagne soon with passata made from them. A freezer favourite ☺️❤️

Sowed my aubergine and peppers yesterday I'm also going to try to grow lemongrass this year in pots as I haven't got an allotment tomato isn't it too early for tomatoes

I finally gave up on any peas except sugar snap & mange tout, as they take up too much space for the return.
I'll be starting peppers, aubergines & tomatoes second week in January, as I left it far too late in 2024. Ended up with less than a dozen cayenne & I need a couple of hundred.
Going to leave melons until mid February.
What I really need to do is start my year planner for 2025.
It bugs me with seed companies that they state what year the seeds were packed & NOT the year they were harvested & that's important with alliums & beans, not so much with tomatoes, peppers & brassicas.
