Melissani Cave, Kefalonia, Greece - Λιμνοσπήλαιο Μελισσάνης, Κεφαλονιά

Το λιμνοσπήλαιο της Μελισσάνης βρίσκεται σε απόσταση 2 χιλιομέτρων βορειοδυτικά της Σάμης, στον Καραβόμυλο της Κεφαλονιάς, και αποτελεί μοναδικό γεωλογικό φαινόμενο.

Η φυσική είσοδος του σπηλαίου είναι κατακόρυφη διαστάσεων 40×50 μέτρων και δημιουργήθηκε από την πτώση ενός τμήματος της οροφής μετά από σεισμό.
Παρόλα αυτά υπάρχει και τεχνητή είσοδος με σκαλοπάτια που επιτρέπει την επίσκεψη στο σπήλαιο.

Ανακαλύφθηκε από τον Γιάννη Πετρόχειλο, το 1951.

Η λίμνη βρίσκεται εικοσι μέτρα κάτω από την επιφάνεια του εδάφους, έχει μήκος περίπου 160 μέτρα, και το βάθος των νερών της κυμαίνεται από 10 έως 40 μέτρα. Σταλακτίτες που έχουν ηλικία 20.000 χρόνων με περίεργα σχήματα στολίζουν το μεγαλύτερο τμήμα του σπηλαίου.

Αν βρεθείτε στην Κεφαλονιά, μία βαρκάδα στο σπήλαιο θα αποτελέσει μοναδική εμπειρία. Η βαρκάδα ξεκινάει από το ξεσκέπαστο τμήμα του σπηλαίου όπου το φως πέφτει στο νερό και δημιουργεί πανέμορφες τυρκουάζ αποχρώσεις και συνεχίζεται στο σκεπασμένο τμήμα.

Στο κέντρο της λίμνης υπάρχει ένα μικρό νησάκι, πάνω στο οποίο βρέθηκαν ευρήματα που πιστοποιούν τη λατρευτική λειτουργία του σπηλαίου, καθώς κατά την αρχαιότητα, οι προϊστορικοί κάτοικοι λάτρευαν τον θεό Πάνα και την παρουσία γυναικείων μορφών, τις γνωστές Νύμφες. Για αυτό το λόγο το σπήλαιο Μελισσάνη ονομάζεται και Σπήλαιο των Νυμφών.

The Melissani lake cave is located 2 kilometers northwest of Sami, in Karavomylos, Kefalonia, and is a unique geological phenomenon.

The natural entrance of the cave is vertical with dimensions of 40x50 meters and was created by the collapse of a part of the roof after an earthquake.
Nevertheless, there is also an artificial entrance with steps that allows visiting the cave.

It was discovered by Yannis Petrochilos, in 1951.

The lake is located twenty meters below the surface of the ground, it is about 160 meters long, and the depth of its waters varies from 10 to 40 meters. Stalactites that are 20,000 years old with strange shapes decorate the largest part of the cave.

If you find yourself in Kefalonia, a boat trip to the cave that will be a unique experience. The boat ride starts from the exposed part of the cave where the light falls on the water and creates beautiful turquoise hues and continues to the covered part.

In the center of the lake there is a small island, on which findings were found that attest to the cult function of the cave, as during antiquity, the prehistoric inhabitants worshiped the god Pan and the presence of female figures, the well-known Nymphs. For this reason, the Melissani cave is also called the Cave of the Nymphs.
