One of the most BEAUTIFUL endings in all of anime!!

The ending always makes me cry because the author originally wanted to make Ash and Eiji go together to Japan but instead we got this bittersweet end😭
edit: turns out ash was always supposed to die but still it’s very sad😓

Also, the fact that when Eiji was shot, Ash pleaded to trade Eiji's life for his own. He was willing to die so that Eiji could live. And when he got to the library after being stabbed, he looked up to the sky, and felt at ease because he believed his debt was repaid. Eiji would be safe.

I usually fucking hate bitterness endings, but banana fish is such a wonderful gem on managing and foreshadowing all it's on how Ash is not destined to find peace in life just made me absolutely crying about it for a fucking week 😅

Bananafish was one of the first anime that I ever watched and was the show that made me want to get into anime. It's my 2nd favorite anime of all time and I think the ending is a big reason for it. You hit the nail on the head here!

banana fish has one of the most tragic endings in all of anime imo. ash worked so hard to kill everyone who traumatized him and put a stop to what they were doing, and just when it seemed like he was finally going to live a happy life, he died. :(

Before going to meet him, when Eiji was in the hospital, Ash prays to God saying something along the lines of "please take me instead".

After Eiji was safe for good, going back to Japan, Ash didn't want to join him because he knew that that was where Eiji needed to be, but Eiji's letter gave him hope for a better future so he tried to catch him at the last minute, but I feel like the reason Ash didn't ask for help once he was st*b*ed and accepted his fate, without trying to heal and later plan to move to Japan and meet Eiji again, was because he realised that that was the deal he had made, and therefore had to take the blow for good and actually "take Eiji's place".

With what he'd gone through he should have been able to easily heal that wound, but chose not to because it was like the heavens telling him not to follow through with what he was about to do, and so at the end when he finishes reading the letter, he looks up at the light coming from the library window as in saying "it's a deal" and stops fighting.

I'm not a religious person, but I always think of this whenever I think of this ending and how layered it is, I could write a whole essay lol

honestly the most heart wrenching anime/manga ever. especially when you put into perspective just how much ash had been through before he met eiji and everything they went through together. he was so close to being able to dedicate his life to who he loved instead of how to survive 😭😭😭 i highly highly recommend the manga for those who haven’t read it already bc it’s just so much more painful with all the extra details abt him and their time together 🥲🤍
