Honestly, writing it down really helps me. There's something about the process of putting it on paper that just concretes it in my brain.

When I take a regular class, I can never remember the combination so I can’t even imagine how you guys do it!!

Video is so helpful for remembering choreography. Writing things down also helps me a lot because it’s easier to take a quick look than a video. I also go over the choreography in my head while listening to the music and really try to connect the moves to the music so if I forget the step, hearing the music will jog my memory. In my dance style, we often have pretty long choreographies, so I like to break them down into chunks, usually with the phrases of the music, and try to remember the parts instead of every single step.

I used to imagine myself doing the choreography in my mind before falling asleep. I would break down every little moment and imagine myself doing it exactly perfectly

Do you know anyone who just marks it through over and over again while saying the emotions that need come with each move because I swear I’m literally the only one
katriinawindsor
honestly the amount of thought put into ballet choreography is amazing

I have the artistry, I’m gaining the strength but have such a hard time remembering!!!! It gives me so much anxiety.

I was definitely a practice person myself. I would do it over and over. My teacher also taught us to replace the counts with key words to help us remember
Tink
Personally I rely on muscle memory so I do it over and over again 😅

I was one of those that would tell myself I would go over the choreography and then proceed to not do anything and still somehow remember it. I took six different dance classes at once so it was a miracle that I remembered it all

Learning and memory are so interesting and variable.

for me since i don’t have that good of memory plus i’m still do grading, i usually refer to some vids of other people doing the choreography cuz the syllabus is the same thing. But if we are doing something out of syllabus, i’ll just keep asking my teacher about the choreography till i get it and it’s just stuck in muscle or brain memory from there 😂

I used to go over it again and again just before i went to sleep. Id get all ready for bed then as i was falling asleep jyst keep going over it. I found it as a great way to stop over thinking. I struggle with sleep and though i can imagine it stressing some people out, it helped keep my brain clam and focused, so i didn't start thinking and worrying about things i didnt beed to.
As a teacher i literally rewrote all the IDTA tap and ballet grade books from rosettes to intermediate levels. Being dyslexic i struggle to read on the spot so i remember written stuff best if i copy it all down and then i take it in as im writing and sirt of remember what line and where in my book what i was teaching was and it helped me remember all those grades with only needing to look at the book to nake sure ive git everything correct.
My daughter as a dancer likes to film routines and thats how she learns. Her dyslexic is worse then mine and right from being tiny she stood behind older girls dancing and coukd watch routines once or twice then start trying it herself. She can't read very well still but can pick up routines from watching so quickly. She has so much anxiety about auditions, but I think unless its for reading 😅 shes good.

I am close to the "don't go over but remember the choreo" boat😂😂😂 I mark it in my body once when I get home, and then I can remember it. I used have to write it down when I was young, but as I started learning more variations, ballets, and reps, I started being able to pick things up and remember them quickly😂

thank you for this! i do a lot of auditions and have a hard time remembering the choreo sometimes
your skin looks amazing! can you maybe film some grwm’s while talking about your plans for the day? like rehearsal schedule, etc. 🩷

I am lucky enough to be the dancer who doesn't do anything and somehow knows all the choreography 😎

Hehe I feel called out in the last sentence 😂
LiviusTheGenius
I remember it by going through it in my head before I go to sleep 😂

I have always been a write down all of the choreography gal, but I also like taking videos of rehearsal to review if it’s allowed. I’ve learned a LOT of choreography just from video, and I learned that if I write down literally everything I see on the video and go over that after rewatching over and over, I can actually learn choreo without the chance of actually doing the movement until rehearsal the next day. Not my favorite way to learn, but it works when you regularly have directors emailing you choreography videos the night before rehearsal. 😂

Ottimo graziosa Lori, non è facile ricordarsi tutte le coreografie, non sono una ballerina non so davvero come fate ❤👏🩰
