Nice video, here's a few comments:

1) The low end torque/ jerky throttle

The FZ6 engine is effectively a detuned R6 engine (with a few modifications), but it's based on what is meant to be a racing engine, so you do need to wring its neck to get the best performance out of it, hence why you need to push the revs up.

Also, though, Yamaha put a "hole" in the power curve between 5000-6000 RPM because that's where emissions are tested, so it tends to bog down at that point.

The easiest way to fix this is with a Power Commander which remaps the ECU to smooth the hole out.

This also fixes the jerky throttle. The reason for this is that, to improve fuel efficiency, when you roll off the throttle, the ECU cuts the fuel to the cylinders, so when you open it up again, there's a momentary lag before the fuel comes back in, causing the jerk.

The Power Commander sorts this by not cutting the fuel.

A related issue is that engines are designed to use the worst possible fuel, so the spark is delayed to give the best chance of igntion.

You can get a 4 degree ignition advancer online which will cause the spark to be advanced for better power response at lower RPMs.

2) The fuel efficiency sounds *way* wrong! I fill the tank to where the petrol covers the "strainer" below the fuel cap and get 175 miles full tank to reserve in winter and 200 in summer (different fuel formulation). Either you're underfilling the tank, over-revving the engine or there's something iffy happening!

3) Check the heat shield under the seat is in place, also you can get extra aluminium shielding to put under the seat to help deflect the seat.

(PS I agree with the other guy, the backwards hat was not a good look ;-) )

1. Poor low end torque means you get to ring it out and ride in the high rev range which is really fun

2. The throttle does have a twitch but with practice and micro adjustments on the roll on you get used to this

3. I have poor fuel efficiency too, maybe we're just heavy

4. It looks great without a belly pan

5. The seat doesn't get hot

Had an 06 fz6 for 5 years now. Craziest mod I've done to it is a chain and sprocket kit. -1 tooth front +1 on rear. Absolute game changer for acceleration straight from the bottom of the rev range. It was perfect for inner city commuting. I could have the clutch all the way out, dragging rear brake and be absolutely crawling slow! Also at 50km/hr in 2nd gear smacking the throttle wide open turns the bike into an absolute animal!

About that jerky throttle, many bikes have that issue, easyest way to reduce that is to play around it with clutch and rev-matching

I had Fazer6 s2 for a year or two, then moved to fazer 8 back in 2011. Ever since I was looking back. Trill of 600ccm
engine, screaming on high revs was such an adiction to me. Well things of the past. Nowdays my Harley Davidson suits me in every way, and I never looked back (appart this video).

Hey bud.
I sold my fz1 to buy 2008 fz6 last year. Used to have r6 before that.
I just just put Power command 5 in my bike . Power band now through whole rev range now !!! I do a lot of fast mountain corners and it's brilliant. Also due to age I also used liquid moly engine flush and sea foam fuel system flush with sea foam spay into top end. She is a keeper !

At 3-4000 RPMs the bike feels like a scooter :))) But i found that good in my first km as a begginer.

Know what you mean, found the on off nature of the throttle response a pain at first, an oil change helped a bit.
One positive aspect of this is, maybe cos I'm still getting used to it, but I find getting the gears right on the FZ is a bit of a challenge so you're never bored!
I've been used to more sedate bikes in the past so for me it's a bit like having to learn to ride in a different style....👍

I have a (naked) S2, mostly used for commuting in London. I'm pretty chuffed if I get 100 miles of London riding before the fuel gauge starts flashing! 150-170 miles outside London though, which is about 55mpg I think. BTW I see you've got PR2 tyres on, what do you think of them? I've just fitted some because they were cheap but wondering if that outweighs the extra mileage and grip you supposedly get from the newer versions. Thanks for posting your series of videos, I'm enjoying them!

Remapping the ECU should fit the on off jerky throttle response.

Hi, I have added a booster plug and I think it helps smooth out the jerkiness although not cheap. And in relation to one of your other points, the heat, a cheap mod is sticking heat shield underneath your seat and the storage area etc, you can actually get quite a lot under there and it does stop the heat a little.

Hey man...Gotta 09 Raven just like yours! Nice vid...I know that you are not into getting pipes(from your other vids) but I bought mine with titanium 2 bros pipes already on.... that avoids the heat prob( I can touch them hot)....but with the OEM exhaust, underneath the pillion seat, is big square can that comes out if you do pipes.

Hello, the videos are not bad for you, but you failed in this one, the engine is fantastically elastic precisely because of the torque, so for a reason it is wild only above 8000 rpm, find another engine that goes smoothly on the sixth from 80 to 240 kmh, as far as consumption is concerned mine has never exceeded 6.4lu žeswtokoj driving otherwise it is normal 5.5 to 6 l.

On defense of one of the best bikes of the world.

1 Regarding the so call, poor low end torque.

Well all 4 cilinder engines have small pistons so they can move less mass, so they really like to have a high rpm power band, that is not only on the FZ6, every 4 cilinder engine behaves like this.

They tunned the FZ6 to have better low end torque, so when you try a Yamaha R6 for example, you would be laughing at so how low is the end torque, is to low, that you have to use the clutch all the time,

On my fz6 i have power from 1000rpm without using the clutch, while on the R6, if i dont use the clutch, the bike even stall.

If you want better low end torque you need a bigger engine, or a engine with a different design, like a v-twin or a linline two cilinder engine.

2 Regarding the throttle jerkiness.

Yes you are absoluiely right and that is the one thing i hate on my bike, is exactly as you described. Exiting engine braking and taking the throttle again, is too jerky, it deliver the power lilke instantly, so you can fell the punch.

The thing is that the FZ6 uses a very simple fuel injection system called Group Type Injection System, that injection is a very basic and primitive type of DIGITAL! fuel injection, and the keyword is that. Its completely digital, so you
lose the analog feel that carburators have, or the sequential injection system on the R6 that treats every cylinder with independent injection.

The FZ6 groups 1 and 4 cilinders, and 2 and 3 cilinders, minimizing the components simplifying the design, the same happends with the high current coils, the fz6 only have 2 coils while the R6 have 1 coil per cylinder.

All of this because they want to have lower costs, to a lower cost bike compared to R6, with the tradeoff of a very jerky, difficult to use throttle response.

3 The fuel efficiency depends of how high are your rpms, if you manage to use your gearbox and use all the gears with lower rpm, you will be better mileage, but poor mileage on city, is not a thing only of the fz6

4 the bellypan thing... very subjective, i dont even like the bellypan.

5 The heat... honestly i dont feel it on the rider side, and on the passenger side is there, but the heat is very tolerable, sometimes even nice because if you ride on cold weather, that would have a good feel to sit on it, but even so, is not so hard the heat, is very moderate.

Can anyone provide a way to insulate the cushion?

Bought one of theese 2 months ago, horrible bike to ride mainly because of the non existant roll on, and the shit sound of the exhaust. Had an fzs 600 2001 before this, and it was a thousand times the bike the fz6 could ever be.
