We got to go up to Seattle and visit our friends over at Puget Systems. They specialize in building expertly crafted PCs for users in all areas of business (or gaming). What we really enjoy about the company is that they have the ability to test and vet all of the current top makers' products and how they run in a wide array of configurations, which basically means they know what parts work best together to get you the best results in your PC. And what's even better is that they can give you all the information upfront, ensuring that you get the best build for your own needs.

Thank you for being so honest, I have never seen a brand technician speak so transparently about the reality of their own products and those of the competition, congratulations.

i made the mistake of getting an average PC for editing a couple years ago, then learned so much and surpassed the capabilities it could handle for the jobs i do now. I built a monster PC and it has let me learn so much more. i recommend building a PC for where you want to be not where you are now, you will definitely learn alot with a faster pc.

This is one of THE most helpful computer discussion I've ever watched. A professional who actually knows the tools of the industry and understands that the use cases actually turn the whole build-decision process around; starting with storage for example. I have some questions about motherboard decisions -- audio choices, I/O requirements, etc., but I'm much more confident now making some decisions about my next rig. Thank you for this.

@15:45 - I disagree. What about rendering the final edit? You most definitely could use a high-end GPU as DR will give you the choice between software or hardware-accelerated exporting. I always do hardware, i.e., GPU does all the final exporting. In any case, great video! You're the only one who did a video like this. Everyone else talks about the best PC for gaming.

I'm running an 8700k with 1080ti and I was having slow down on my footage from the new Osmo Pocket 3, which was capturing 4k60 10bit. I thought about splurging on a new system for fun since mine is somewhat old. But a friend advised that I consider paying for the Blackmagic license to help boost. I thought about it, and since Blackmagic has been allowing free software in Resolve, I figure it's nice to pay them back for all the time I've used it.
In any case, long story short, all my footage magically worked better in the Studio version.
The monitoring playback is smooth, the rendering went up by like 125% speed. I was doing 40-45fps rendering in Resolve free, and it went to 90-110fps in the Studio version.
Probably is the cheapest upgrade if you want to do this.

But I'm still eyeing an upgrade of the pc hardware just for the hell of it.

as of Davinci Resolve 19 Beta, hardware decoding is available on the free version of the software! If you've tried Resolve before and felt it was slow, try it again in the 19 beta, or whenever 19 becomes the stable release!

i5-12600, 48GB ram, 3060 Dual 8GB, Asus 27" ProArt 4K monitor. The PC was built for my at Memory Express in Winnipeg. I will buy Studio today. Then there is the fact the internet here allows me to watch this video at 480p.

This video is crazy. It should be the first video everyone watches before they start out video editing with resolve.

Bro, I've been scratching my head for months thinking about this and you just solved my problem, who to talk to, to buy a PC, I've been using Mac's since 2000, but I'm tired of Apple and their I want to stick it to you mentality. This will be my first PC ever, my only issue is, I have a feeling, arm processors are maybe the future. Need to call this guy's soon. Thanks!!

This landed at exactly the moment I am considering upgrading my graphics PC as I have recently moved from stills photography to video. Two vids in and I am starting to feel where the h/w limitations are! Fantastic information targeted exactly where it's needed for video creation, and some of it has gone straight to my hardware builder :) Thanks Casey and Puget-man <3

If this video did anything for me, it proved that I did my research well before purchasing my desktop. I watched EVERYTHING I could, talked to EVERYONE I could…it comes down to doing your research. Thank you for this wonderful conversation with Puget

I started editing with a 2023 mac mini M2 with 8g ram. It did a decent job. I recently upgraded to a mac studio M2 with 32g ram and it runs amazingly on resolve studio.
