Actual proof that it really has happened and really is returning to our screens. After so many years of promises and false starts I don't think my brain really believed this even after HBO gave it the green light, and started filming. But there it is, for real, new Deadwood, and it is a glorious thing to behold.

I just finished watching the movie continuation of the brilliant HBO series "Deadwood, " which ended without an ending some years ago. It is an enormous challenge to pick up such a well-done series years later and not disappoint. The movie succeeds on every level, answering every call for skill and mastery. I haven't seen better acting, smarter writing, more beautiful cinematography or finer directing in any movie for a very long time. The music moved me as few soundtracks have, supporting the action without intruding, and reflecting and illuminating the heart of this deeply moving and profoundly satisfying journey. The movie took me forward, with never a sag or a stall, from the unfinished business of the brilliant series to a poignant state of affairs I could accept as a worthy finish, if I must. But nothing could unhorse me from hoping for another immersion in the life and times of Deadwood. Those who created this window into the past, and who brought it alive with unforgettable characters and brilliant cinematography, have done so with such uncanny skill that life will go on in Deadwood for me whether or not, down its road through time, I get to look in on it again.
