Paranjpe is the first JNU professor I came across in my life.

I wonder the audience understood what Prof. Makarand said. They seemed to have come to make fun of him.

The most articulate man that went around in the campus of JNU. Professor Paranjape is a treat to listen to!

They support Kashmir separatism !! Really ?? Professor Makarand rightly said that such idea comes from the communists. They don't have any concept of the right to dissent. Professor later mentioned in an interview that that seminar was hijacked by the kanhaiya Kumar union and his followers to propagate their agendas, whereas that event was meant for the teachers to have a debate and new guest speakers were there without any notification. Kanhaiya miusing his power in an authoritarian way imposed his ideologies and said he would be going to chair the event. Besides, you can see students hackling, mocking a professor. Where do they learn all these from ?

The age gap between professors and students seem to be pretty low. Some of these 'students' look 40+.

Very professional on the part of Prof Makarand even when those students were there only to mock him. And he wasn't even provided a chair in the beginning!! The way you treat your professors is appalling!

What a great personality is Makarand Paranjape, his ideas aren't fuelled by ideologies and thus, he can look at things exclusively and agree or disagree with two separate events which a person of ideology can either support or oppose due to their ideological affiliation. It's simple, if you attach and identify yourself too deeply with a cult, ideology, group you lose the courage of self analysis and self criticism. This leads to a dichotomisation of anything and everything which if you think practically, is not right. Things aren't dichotomous. You cannot assume that if one supports or agrees with one thing, will also do the same with other. This assumption is killing India nowadays and there's no scope for respectful political discussion.

Dogs running around on the campus explains the status of Indian society -- every aspect of Indian society whether it is education, judiciary, police, administration, military. etc. reflects the totally undisciplined, unorganized, careless, irresponsible, selfish attitude of the Indian citizens.

That was very disrespectful on Kanhaiya's part! They could've felicitated the other person after the lecture. Respect to the Professor for being so patient.

I can clearly see students are not responding in the way they respond when Nivedita Menon says that kashmir not a part of India .

My takeaway from the lecture, Tagore's anti-revolutionary politics, if looked at more specifically in the context of a more radical Bengal as compared to rest of the nation that was something Paranjape didn't touch upon, Bengal's politics has seen more shades of red ever since. Tagore has been influential in impossible ways but so has been Left. What can't be denied is that Tagore himself keeps bringing back revolutionary characters in his novels, with whom he much less can agree with. Isn't it self understood that the dilemma of seemingly 'revolutionary' characters are no less dilemmas of the challenging liberal author who confronts his own politics within his works?
It also needs to be acknowledged that his most exciting political stories are not just about 'his' politics but are also based upon the exceptional women like Bimala who become the central site of ideological, political, cultural, religious and 'gender' conflicts. They challenge the hegemony of their social structures while men go on to make a mockery of them, Tagore is sympathetic to the women characters but also treats them as innocent, easily influenced by baser appeals, emotions and so on. Maybe one has to forgive the author for his time and writings, for more than one reasons!

Also, I wanted to suggest an interaction of Gandhi and Nehru on his book the Hind Swaraj through the letters Gandhi had written to him on his position in the book. And Nehru's rejection of his ideas in book will also be an interesting position which is also further contemplated by many scholars as the difference between Nehru's active politics of progress against Gandhi's constant passive contemplations returning to the ultimate untouched past (what has been also interpreted as the pre-colonial by critics)
