I Hate it But I Love it - Diehard Petrolhead Drives a Tesla for The First Time in His Life

In this video I do something I have never done before and that is to drive an EV (BEV, battery electric vehicle) more specifically a Tesla Model 3. In the video I share my genuine and honest first impressions, my frustrations with the touchscreen, charging attempts and cornering experience.

I have to say that the driving was a lot more enjoyable than I imagined. Different but not that different. Some things, mostly related to the user interface were definitely not as enjoyable and were even frustrating. The goal of the video was to share honest and genuine feelings and impressions through the eyes of a petrolhead so that other petrolheads can get a relatable second hand experience of EV driving.

I also have to say that I'm ashamed the Internet almost managed to convince me into thinking that I must pick a side. Choose one over the other. Stand against EVs because I'm a petrolhead. I realized that I started to dislike these cars without ever having tried them. I started getting on a bandwagon and I think that's stupid and it does nothing other than rob me of new experiences. There's no reason to pick sides. It's just a car. We only live once so I think it's better to taste and try everything rather than argue about things. It's better to appreciate the incredible diversity of this interesting time we live in.

Thanks for watching.

TLDR: I genuinely enjoyed the driving experience but disliked the user interface.

It made me smile to hear you ranting about apps, passwords and constantly giving out personal information. I feel exactly the same but thought it was because I'm 57 years old, but it turns out its a cross-generational thing 😀

Your philosophical spin at the end was great and a welcome addition to a better world. Love it thank you.

Petrolhead here. I had one of these for 4 years. I agree, undoubtedly the best daily to drive around town and get the kids to school safely with a full "tank" everyday when you can charge home, plus very limited maintenance. Now the biggest problem is that the acceleration is the only party trick, you need something else for the weekends. Personally chose an MX5, which is slower, less practical, less safe, more expensive to run (and insure in my area, an MX5 yup!) but it brings the smiles the Tesla is missing. Thanks for all your great content!

Grabs the tow hook. "You use this to bash your head in after looking for the button to open the trunk"

Some achievements might include "Googled for instructions 25 times". "Found 10 non functioning charging stations" "Yelled what the fuck 50 times". Great video

F, even the glove box ? that is not cost cutting, I bet the plastic box with a plastic button release is way cheaper than a damn motor connected to a computer to open a damn glove box.

Headline: Respected Youtuber checks himself into psych ward after renting EV. Kept repeating "no buttons".

I am a retired engineer. I've been arguing your points on user interface FOREVER! First principles of human/machine interaction should not be violated! Most drivers are used to a stoplight that has RED as stop, GREEN as go. Change that, and you kill a lot of people. Change the paradigm of daily car use and you get a lot of very frustrated people!
The screen should at least mimic a row of commonly used buttons available on practically every car.
Great comments on tribalism by the way.

8:59 How to open the glovebox if the table is broken? "Oh, sorry mr. Policeman, I can't show you my documents, because the huge tablet is broken and this is the only way to open the glovebox, where my docs are".

I hate the trend to have every setting in a UI with a passion. It's unlawful to use your phone while driving because it's distracting (which is a good thing IMO), but searching for some stupid setting on your giant car tablet is absolutely fine...

Thank you for making this video. As a motorcyclist I now know to emergency brake everytime I see a Tesla as the driver is guaranteed to be fiddling with their tablet control interface and not observing their surroundings!!!

I can never find the hazards in any rental either, this is why I have a wife to point it out and call me a dummy afterwards.

I suppose for an iPad with such a massive battery that it needs wheels to make it portable, the performance as a mode of transport isn’t too shabby really.

I'm still astounded that the regulators are allowing these big screens in modern cars. Petrol or electric. As if it's not hard enough to keep people's minds on the task of driving.
