Just a reminder that the Qu also kept the Bone crushers’ ancestors as pets. According to the book, they were tiny humans bred to have colorful and decorative beaks derived from their teeth, that eventually filled out the ecological niches left on their planet when the Qu abandoned it.

it’s interesting to me that the qu have very human-like thoughts & emotions. the fact that they felt spite towards the star people who resisted them, to the point where they punished them in making them the colonials. also the amusement they felt with some of their creations

The fact that people were angry at the fact you made a video talking about the POV of a bunch of fictional, hyper-religious space dragonflies is so damn funny to me. The Qu weren't even fascists either, they were zealots who thought they were gods. Technically the book confirms that The Qu were doing the right things from their point of view because of their religion. To The Qu, the Star People were basically ants

Just listened to the full novel a couple weeks ago. Can't believe I haven't heard of this before, it's so much fun diving into it. You got a great channel man

it can be argued that like the Qu didn't explicitly HATE humanity (except for maybe the colonials ofc) but rather just saw us as lesser or not sufficiently sapient the same way ppl look at cows that they breed and genetically modify for eating or how dogs have been bred into specific sub-breeds bcos some ppl wanted a certain type of dog. Like, ppl seem to forget WE are also guilty of genetically interfering with life on earth.

I wonder if the fact that in their religion they themselves are the gods of the universe means that they practice some sort of self-worship that would be alien for us to understand. I like to think of their religion as having a completely different structure to what we have on Earth, where typically we engage in some form of worship to a god or entity, meanwhile if the Qu believe themselves to be gods then their rituals are instead centred around themselves, or perhaps they instead have their genetically modified creations perform rituals around them? Who knows

The idea to not dehumanize a villain is just stupid. No villain is outright evil for the sake of it - all villains always have a motive and a soft side. Heck, even Hdolf Atler loved animals and vas a vegeteranian.

Maybe the Qu migrate in a similar fashion to how hunter gatherer societies would migrate seasonally in order to not overuse the lands resources. Maybe the Astaromorphs and Ansephili(excuse my spellings) die out ultimately because their respective empires(or combined empire) failed to observe something the Qu already knew and ended up collapsing. Maybe the Qu were really mad because the worlds the humans were terraforming were places they'd already inhabited countless times before.

Maybe the Qu are not a hiveminds and there are different factions around the universe, each controlling large portions of territory and often in conflict with each other.
Maybe the fall of the Qu at the end was due to internal conflicts.

Considering the hedonist where created as pets and the colonials where made out of spite it's clear the QU aren't above feeling affection or contempt for lesser beings.

I wonder how many people who trash you for 'defending the Qu' love the Imperium from Warhammer 40K

I kinda like the idea that some qu publicly opposed their species treatment of other sentients and they were viewed in a similar way to how our society views peta or extreme environmentalists “look at that crazy person they think we should treat those hairless apes like people”

Humanity would totally do the same thing the Qu did. We already have on smaller scales

I wonder how the Qu's spaceship would work, or if they even have a spaceship

It's interesting how you brought up their supposed diet, and going by what their physiology appears to be (something akin to a cross between a mammal and an insect, particularly something akin to a dragonfly crossed with an ant), I would speculate that they would subsist on a diet composed of what could be referred to as vegetation, but with an interesting take on it.

The Qu do have a large set of mandibles similar to that of an ant. This reminds me of a species of American ant that farms a species of fungus. The ants will kill and bring dead creatures back to their nest, but they do not eat them. Instead, they bring the dead creatures to an inner chamber in their nest, and toss it into a festering mass of this fungus. The fungus is tended to and farmed by worker ants, and then afterwards excess fungus is broken off and consumed by the colony.

I can't help but think that the Qu, being nomadic (and rather capricious) beings may have their entire society inside of a large colony fleet of starships (most likely with some kind of superluminal propulsion system, perhaps similar to the Gravitals) and each ship has a central chamber that functions as a few different things all combined into one: life support, waste reprocessing, chemical production, laboratory, food generation and reprocessing center, and even a means of generating new genomes for creatures and the generation of new specimens.

How is this done? The Qu farm a species of lichen (a combination of a plant and a fungus) that acts the same as the aforementioned fungus farming ant. This alien lichen can be used as a source of food, medicine, and with genetic modification, possibly the creation of other chemicals as well. Some chemicals may be mutagenic, and the Qu alter these mutagens in order to create the genomes of the species they alter. Afterwards, the specimens to be mutated are placed into a mound of said fungus and mutated by it. Successful mutations are preserved, and unsuccessful ones are discarded, which brings me to the next point:

Waste reprocessing: the Qu may use this lichen to break down failed experiments (and maybe even their own dead) as a means of generating more chemicals, medicine, and/or food for the rest of the Qu.

Speaking of chemicals, a breathable atmosphere on a spacecraft is a must, and if this is a lichen, part of it is a plant, and could be used to reprocess the atmosphere (CO2 reprocessing into oxygen).

Also, considering how this lichen may be the source of a lot of the Qu's nutrition, it may even have a significance in their religion as the substance that gives life to their society, and perhaps even is the source of their faith in the first place. It could have been forever ago that the Qu stumbled upon this stuff on their long-forgotten homeworld and came to depend on it for survival. Similar to how certain resources throughout history have been seen with a reverence on Earth, this lichen could have become the basis of the Qu's faith, especially after seeing what it was capable of doing under the right conditions, what with its potential mutagenic properties which could have also accelerated, by pure accident, the evolution of the minds and bodies of the Qu.

While I'm on that subject: there are _plenty_ of fungi on Earth that have hallucinogenic properties which have been used by Shamans around the world, and the images and altered states of mind they bring could have very well been the inspiration for various deities, figures, spirits, and so on that were prevalent in ancient religions. The Qu, with their mutagenic lichen, could have been the exact same way, especially if an individual who regularly consumed the original version of this substance on a regular basis for not just food, but a psychedelic or spiritualistic experience wound up mutated from it over a certain amount of time and thus also became physically and mentally enhanced from its effects.

This could form the basis of the Qu's faith; a deity or deities that are the supposed "mind" or "soul" of this lichen that they share a sort of mutualistic symbiosis with. The Qu believe that they are the hand (or "wings-and-prehensile-tails") of their "Lichen Deity/Deities", doing the will of these beings by traveling the universe and mutating things based around the supposed desires of said creatures, and they use their own lives, the existence of their lichen, the effects the lichen's chemical substances has on their own bodies and the bodies of others, as "irrefutable", dogma-ridden proof that they are correct (morally and scholarly) on what they believe and what they set out to do.

-In short, cut the space bugs some slack; their whole society could just be high on space-shrooms.-

I can imagine a qu enjoying a nice nap with their pet hedonist curled up in their lap.

I feel like the Qu are actually fairly normal psychologically, but they’re so incredibly advanced that humans appear more like meaningless insects to them. The average person is fairly empathetic towards others, true psychopathy being present in a very small percent of the population. However, no one really bats an eye when you squash an ant or other small insect. They’re so incredibly beneath you that they seem more like somewhat animate objects than conscious living things. It’s possible that the Qu are advanced enough to simply not acknowledge creatures like us.
