If I get stuck for something to draw, I draw a portrait. I draw hyper realistic things. I find portraits to have all the elements/textures in one drawing. Smoothness of skin, roundness in faces for keeping your hand in with shading. Roughness and depth in hair. Shine and highlights in eyes and just the overall perfection needed in drawing a portrait. An eye, the nose, ear etc is off, and it ruins the whole thing.

Here was my idea, look at a reference and see what kind of personality it has, like drawing a hippo. I found a nice hippo picture and while looking at it, to me he had the face of a gangster. So I turned him into a gangsta, driving his low rider and I even gave him a bandana and prison tattoos. I had fun with that.

Look at things. You can do hyper-realism if you want, but I like to see in them something more than just lines and shading.
