I remember years ago when ESPN's Bomani Jones pushed back on the popular idea of people boasting of football and basketball coaches being "father figures" to kids coming from broken homes. He said something along the lines of "You're father can't also have an interest in whether you win or lose" the idea being that parents have to love unconditionally and that while coaches may care for those kids, in many instances, they also need the kid to perform to win to help their career. It's too common that kids who have that parental hole in their lives and are extremely talented like Deryck are exploited by sick adults in their lives who take advantage of them. Also, Deryck speaking out is huge because there's still a stigma for male victims of abuse to come forward.

I hate to heat that Deryck went through this. Growing up, Sum 41 was always a staple in my music rotation. Loved their blend of pop punk, and metal. They always have a special place in my heart. I hope Deryck is healing and getting through this and gets some justice, because this is just appalling
