Actually if you understood the Roman army during the battle of Adrianople, it was a different kind of an army compared to the classical legionary based army of the classic period from 0 AD to 180 AD.

By the 3rd century AD, the Roman army became a more balanced army with legionaries and cavalry units.

By the 4th and 5th century, the Roman army had various units from heavily armored legions to the missile cavalry and even shock cavalry like the cataphracts and the elite cavalry of the Scholae Palatina.

At Adrianople, the Roman army was actually poorly deployed by Valens having marched them all morning to the battlefield without taking a break to feed them prior to the battle which happened in the early afternoon. He decided to go ahead into combat without replenishment and that was actually a key decider.
