The writing and publishing business can be incredibly difficult to break into, but it is possible with the right skills, attitude, and determination. Here's how I did it.

As a youth, I wanted to become a writer. I did have some of my poetry published, but I could not finish a short story because I would rewrite the first half 42 times and then give up. I wanted perfection and was incapable of achieving such.

I ended up a computer game designer and programmer. Sort of like writing interactive stories. Loved it. Wrote perfect stories with the aid of the game player.

Easy to get your game published. All software publishing companies are desperate for programmers. Just need to learn to program computer graphics, world physics, materials and ballistics, artificial intelligence and how to optimize code through the use of machine language and everyone will want you.

As far as designing and programming successful games, all you have to do is offer a constant variable reinforcement schedule and the players will find it very difficult to stop playing in order to eat or sleep. Hope this helps. 🙂

How To Become A Writer:

‘You should be doing these things. If you don’t, you probably can’t write. Don’t write.’

This has been a masterclass w Andrew Klaven.

No ad for DW Publishing!? Come on Andrew! For the brand!!!! If I knew that DW Publishing was currently taking on books then I would actually focus on my novel and not my source books.

You can make money writing, but there are easier ways to make 30K a year.

Words of wisdom, Andy, words of wisdom. I never read your work, I have read other works like C. S. Lewis, Edgar Allan Poe, and Ray Bradbury. I agree with you about writing. If you can't write, find something better to do.

By the way, I saw your movie starring Michael Douglas and Sean Bean, Don't Say A Word. Sean nailed his evil character. So did Michael. Sean showed how evil can break promises and that is what's happening today. But in terms of writing, the way I improve my work is I copywork. What is that? I take great writing or literature and copy word-for-word front to back over and over. And let me tell you (actually this comment can tell you) it has worked for me. Hunter S. Thompson, while working for Time Mag, snuck in the books Great Gatsby and A Farewell to Arms, copied all their work to see what it was like to be the writer. Any one who reads this comment maybe should try copyworking. But I agree with Andrew: don't PLAGIARIZE. It's just wrong and illegal. Writers can sue.

A friend of mine had written and had published a book
I asked how do you get a book published?
His wise comment
"Write the f*cking thing"

Writing books is probably the least rewarding thing I have ever done. I have a second book that is a few grammatical checks and a cover away from being (self) published and, let me tell you, it is not worth it, but I would hate my 70 year old self if I don't get my trilogy done. It bears too much on my mind to NOT do.

I just sold my first novel to a publisher. It comes out early next year. Whether or not it sells...that's another matter. I have to learn about marketing.

I’m currently in the querying trenches and it is rough out here. I’m very concerned about being a conservative sci fi writer and writing social commentary from a conservative perspective. I’m not giving up, but it is tough to be a writer. Not something you would do if you could help it, which I can’t.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, a dark and stormy night and the clocks were striking thirteen, the summer they electrocuted the Rosenbergs, and I didn't know what I was doing in New York, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth.

Great video! Thanks for this 👍 As someone trying to pursue writing on the side, I’m interested to hear your advice on self-publishing next.

Don't write for money. Do something challenging and meaningful for money, use the story and struggle from your real life making a living to fuel your writing.
