Is SAPA, Vietnam a tourist trap?

In this, the first episode of our Vietnam series, we’re visiting the busy tourist town of Sapa, located in the far north of the country, high up in the mountains.

Sapa is a town that splits opinion. Some people love it, while others really hate it. We’re here to find out for ourselves whether the town has become a victim of its own success.

Please bear in mind, at the time of filming, we had already been travelling for 3 months and as such, we were pretty tired when we arrived in Sapa. Apologies for the grumpiness.

Sigh, guys, on, really, it's the Views. You are literally standing in an incredibly beautiful spot complaining about the garishness of the photo gimmicks that are everywhere in Asia. Yeah, if you're from the West, we can do without the props to make the photographs work. But just don't use them and look at the incredible views. What I see, in the backgrounds of much of your footage is stunning. Yeah, so you have seen "stunning" too many times. But but but but but, it's still beautiful. Look at it.

Since 1998, I was among the first ones to travel from Saigon to Hanoi and what I need to concur is that Ha-long Bay as well as other panoramic landscapes in Vietnam is unquestionably charming and attractive; but under the rule of Communism, everything is a trap, not only tourism!
