cant you just adjust the torque on your drill ?

They literally make clutchs on drills for a reason You can use your clutch to only allow it to drive deep enough and once it hits pressure it'll stop you can literally fine tune your drill to how far it'll drive a screw down hence why there is numbers on the drill. 2-6 is what you would be using for an application like
