Recovering Kraken here. Currently about $60k in with about a year and a half play time. I loved this video and it really clicked with me. So many valid points were mentioned here I don’t even know where to start. I can’t tell you how many champs that Ive chased that were must haves, or Hydra specialists, or god tier, etc. and most of them don’t end up getting any playtime. The Archer comment resonated a lot with me - I was somewhere in the region of $5000-$6000+ spent just during the monster hunter event to pull all the champs. Was so happy to pull a second archer and still to this day, I haven’t been able to incorporate her into any of my teams. And this was a champ that I HAD to have. The list just goes on from there. At my height of big spending, I was spending around $2000-$5000+ a month on this game. I’ve reigned myself in a bit since then, and after coming to terms with a lot of things mentioned in this video. Now I basically whale once or twice a month instead of buying whatever I want. And I will say this..when you make the choice to become a whale, eventually the game will reach a point where you aren’t enjoying the game if you aren’t spending. Everything starts to feel lackluster and the FOMO really sets in. The game is designed for these exact reasons! While I still haven’t completely broken my spending habits, I can say that I am enjoying the game much more without feeling like I have to do every event and chase every fusion, put up 500k points every cvc, etc. Whaling out is truly a blessing and a curse in itself..I can tell you all about like 90% of the legendaries, what’s in their skill kit, where they are effective, how to build them..but I can’t tell you much about most of the epics and rares in the game. I skipped to legendaries essentially and never got to experience working with what I had. Obviously I’m aware of the top tier epics and use a few, but there’s tons of useful epics out there that I will never use or even know about. Sorry for the chapter book, but I just wanted to say I love the video and thank you for releasing it to the community. More people need to be aware of this and I’m happy to hear some CC finally bringing light to the matter

That's why Galek is the best starter. Gets you used to disappointment and has a good chance to stop you from playing the game before getting too addicted.

I recently realized I was so invested in getting champions that I didn't have time to build them, case in point the recent event for Shemnath. I looked at my resources and knew I had no chance when I suddenly realized, I had pulled Shemnath some months before and it was just sitting in my vault! It was like a lightning bolt hit and now, although I still participate in some events, I only do the ones that will help me with the resources I need to build up the champions I have. Honestly, I have some great champs that are just wasting away in the vaults. Another great and necessary video Ash!

To add to what CrissCrossApplesause3 said: spending money in this game almost feels like using the Contra code to beat Contra vs just playing Contra for fun, getting good over time and feeling that big rush when you finally beat it.

Spending big bucks in Raid doesn’t get you much and once you have it… what next? Chase another champ that I might end up not using? A huge part of the fun of this game is building teams using the champs you have and making them work. Always chasing the next big goody just to bypass that fun is kind of silly.

Why be in a rush? Plarium is forced to keep adding bigger and better champs in the game so don’t be in a hurry to catch up to their ever-moving finish line. After years of playing this game and a decent chunk of money spent, that’s how I feel about it anyway.

I think this is a good articulation on why I’ve found starting a new account every 9 mos (ftp) is the most fun for me. Literally getting khorugar building him out and placing him in the vault was the beginning of the end in this last account. Then after this last fusion I was lucky enough to pick up 3 new leggos in the process but I have no desire to build any of them because I’m pretty happy with my existing teams. Anyone of those leggos woulda been a game changer early game though. Starting over and with different starter champions changes things up. Or maybe I’m just rationalizing being adhd as hell.

i have to be honest. i have fallen into the money trap a lot and almost every puchase has made me somewhat sad. i feel like if you want to spend money on a game then it is to get something out of it and not the chance to get something out of it. i learned really quick that buying stuff is not rewarding at all in the sense that you didnt really earn anything. like he said in the post ''why spend if it dosent help anyways''. i had my account for 4 years i wanna say (its probably 5 years, but im getting too old to remember) and i made a completely free to play account and i kinda enjoy that more. the exitement of pulling a couple of ancient shards to see what will come out is way more fun than just buying a ton to maybe get the 1 champ you want. really appreciate you making this video.
stay frosty my guy and much love :)

I've told myself that I will only ever spend to get cosmetics (skins) in game for champs I have. I recently spent for the first time on the Coldheart Necrobia skin because after 1 year playing Raid f2p, I felt like it was fair to spend a little since I've gotten so much entertainment for $0 and the cosmetic upgrade doesn't ruin the best parts of the game (resource management, creative strategy to surpass challenges, etc). I totally understand why some people spend in game (lack of time, speed up building new champs, etc) but this game to me is so much more fun when you don't throw money at shards to get all the meta champs and only use the meta strats to beat all the in game challenges.

I totally agree, when I started I was spending quite a bit, but for the last 2 years I only purchase monthly gems pack for 9, 99 and occasional forge pass, that's it and I manage to get to plat arena from time to time, can do about 600 mil on hydra, clear most of sintranos rotation, clear hard doom tower and every new good champ just makes my day :)

3:40 This 💯I wish more content creators would be more critical of champions and not just praising all of them. It's one thing to want to be positive, but it's not helpful to players on limited budgets, whether that's time or money. "Situational" is the biggest cop-out too, because everything is situational.

I honestly think this is the best video you have ever made, and will be the most eye opening video to so many players. Plarium will almost certainly hate it, because you are opening peoples eyes to the FOMO they create, and indeed the power creep they are happy to allow in order to facilitate it. This is why they 'nerf' champs that do more than they thought, but never 'nerf' the new OP fusion that breaks the game. They haven't broken anything, they work exactly as intended, so you will spend to fuse the next one that's even better than the previous one, while hoping you don't use your brain and realize, you've already beaten all the games content, all you are doing is making the number you beat it by, go up slightly! Thank you, and keep up the good work Ash 😉

Man, this video is spot on! I've been playing Raid 6 months now and noticed there is a lot of FOMO in this game. I've been playing (grinding) another game for 23+ years, so Raid is just something I play for fun. I did invest probably $100 the first month I played just to start with some decent champs, but I quickly learned that pulling shards is no differnt than scrating lottery tickets. The odds are shit. So instead of investing in Raid, I play scratch tickets. So far I'm up about $600 lol. Oh yeah, I get Scyl tonight in less than an So excited! I've been seeing her in your vids for 6 months now lol. Thanks for the vid Ash, see ya in the next one!

I gotta hand it to you Ash, you have made a few clips like this. It has really helped me out. Been playing for about a year and a half now. Spent a little bit, most of it in the first 6 months.
Skipped the Zena champ, was a pay only thing and I was mad. After seeing that I never even noticing I didn’t have her, I realized the point you are making here. I didn’t need that champ, as I don’t need most the champs that come out, I’m just sold that I do.
Long story short, after skipping the last 4 fusions, and playing my account for me, never had so much fun with game and it’s costing me only a raid card a month (I’m strictly mobile, so it’s a must lol)

This comment from ChrisCross ended up making me reflect and think about how tedious Siege Mode really is and that the game's creative team could have made good use of the Champions Lore, which is very well made, by the way, because I ended up getting the I love reading almost all new Champions lore and it's something that seems silly but it's an RPG element that entertains me.

I think it is something that is underutilized and would be having a story mode in which you unlock whenever you receive a new champion or something that is ultimately fun to play.

Yes there is a story in the campaign progression at the beginning of the game but you quickly finish it.

I don't care about new rewads, just something different to purely entertain.

Creating cinematics for each new champion received would be something different, for example.

The animated series was really cool for me, break away from the sameness.

The fact that a $1m account exists reinforces how little plarium has to care about f2p or low spenders

I play 10 accounts. Been here since day 1. And at times I still feel I want more. I've soent a little money on maybe 3 accounts thru the years as I learned. As well, not chase content creators or those getting donations to spend spend spend. The game is fun and your giving everything you need over time. No reason to actually pay or feel accepted by the top spenders. Enjoy rhe ride but help a stranger before you spend.

I will say that the aspect of FTP I enjoy is being forced to make due with what you have (faction wars comes to mind, where I really had to out of the box think for some levels to fully clear it). It can be really satisfying albeit sometimes frustrating when you feel completely roadblocked. Little things like Marksman being my first Epic and then I see Ash listing him as one of the worst in the game, but he was really big for my Arena and Clan Boss progression with proper gearing and support. It makes pulling an account changing champ or lucky 6 star soul feel even more momentous because you start to wonder what you can accomplish with better tools at your disposal.

In my opinion, clan members also make me feel like I need the new champs. Either because I see that they has it and I don't, or because they do more damage in CB or Hydra using them. So clans facilitate spending too because most clans have spenders or at least luckier ones than me. :D
I am trying not to spend on shards, because I know it's a neverending gambling crap. Archer was the only champ I tried to get that way and I spent on shards (not too much but it's a lot compared to the usual nothing). "Fortunately" I didn't get her which helped me realize that I shouldn't do that, it's like literally burning my money...

ASH! There is a little problem in the game I haven't seen anyone address, and I think it should be mentioned.

When the soul merchant first dropped, they made room for 6 rolls of epics, 4 leggos, and 4 rares, because there were way more epics than leggos and rares. However, now there are JUST AS MANY Legendaries as there are epics, and no mention from plarium on expanding the Legendary slots to 6! Not to mention of course that we have also received more epics since that time as well, even further increases the disparity on how hard it is to get the specific Legendary soul we want. I really hope you'll agree with me that they should expand the slots to 6 and campaign just as hard as you did for epic empowerment!

i remember wanting Teodore so much, i got him and he just didn't fit into any of my teams and for over a year or so, he's been gathering dust in the darkest depths of my vault .
but i am not mad at that because it didn't cost me a dime to get him or 90% of the really S tier meta champs that i have on my account . if Plarium shut down tomorrow, i would be able to happily bid them fairwell because they are not leaving with any significant amounts of my money . i'm talking like $80 over a span of 4 years
