I've literally never heard "history repeats itself" used to deride history. It's always used in an attempt to get others to study it usually because shit is happening that bear a striking similarity to things in the past leading up to some tragedy.

Was it not "Those who don't know history, and doomed to repeat it, " which is the concept of systems and actions of mankind repeat. For example, the rise and fall of the several empires that have existed throughout history. An empire gets power, gets too big, overextend, and then be taken over by the next empire.

History rhymes, it doesn’t repeat.

Interesting perspective, always thought "history repeating" is just generalized belief among people, rooted in things like human memory imperfections, confirmation bias, pattern recognition fallacy's and similar quirks. Didn't know it was actually a concept postulated by Hegel and Marx.. Great info man, only wish video was a bit longer ;)

Some philosophers are hard to understand because their ideas are complex. But when a philosopher is hard to understand because of their writing style, then that's just bad writing and being deliberately difficult just to show off. This is sometimes even done to embellish and disguise a less than adequate idea.

I do find Hegel's idea of a Zeitgeist fascinating. And I'm interested in learning more about his philosophy after this video.

I like the idea of history tending to rhyme. That isn't as catchy as the cliche of history repeating itself, but still.

The themes of history repeat themselves over and over again.  Society is foolish to ignore it.  Loved the French Revolution/Napoleon examples.

I think it's about how we should study history, so we can learn from our mistakes or we will make the same mistake

This is probably the 7th video I've seen of yours today. I was brought over through HistoryBuff's recent review of Tora Tora Tora, and have been stalking your channel ever since. I love your content. I purposely sought out some of your more "controversial" subject matters just to see if you pushed any political ideology, and I was very happy to see that you're as unbiased as one can get these days. So I've subscribed and I'll definitely recommend your channel to any of my other history-minded friends. I like your "just the facts" mentality, which is lacking in a lot of these other channels.

I think the idea of history repeating itself is often used to mean that factors of previous events return. It's basically a less articulate way of saying "those who fail to study their history are doomed to repeat it" but extending that idea a little bit further.

I think Greece might be why people feel history repeats itself. That place had cities go from freedom to anarchy to oppression to freedom over and over.

World's tragedy never vanished, it was cyclic life, no afterlife, no progress of humanity, we always repeat the same tragedy as long as we live on earth. No biblical final judgement days, no torah world to come, only tearful cyclical life! Human fates is SORROW!!!!

Wasn't it Mark Twain who quipped, "History doesn't necessarily repeat itself but it often rhymes."

"Those who don't learn from history are Doomed to repeat it." False? true? Or poetic gray area?

The fact the father of Communism came up with the belief that history repeats itself blows my mind.

History rhyming is better than repeating.

But it is not right to say that no one believes that history actually repeats itself verbatim.

There are theories in physics involving infinite space and / or infinite time in which any set of quantum events, such as the events from the formation of our solar system to you recording a youtube video will be repeated to any degree of exactness that you want to choose; the more exact, the more rare the repetition, but the rarity never reaches zero. One must only consider a large enough volume of spacetime and bang: history repeats itself. Somewhere or sometime else, but it repeats itself.
