Those are federal taxes that are being paid by the people and industries of those states, not state taxes which are used for state expenditures.

Libertarianism has a left-wing origin (anarcho-communist Joseph Dejacque), while Liberalism has a right-wing origin (laissez-faire capitalist Adam Smith); these terms have each been misused by Americans, who now see Libertarianism as right-wing & Liberalism as left-wing.

Many Americans use the word "Orwellian" to characterize what they believe to be "socialist" such as the USSR, when George Orwell himself was a socialist and actually criticized the authoritarian regime for NOT being socialist.

As you say, Liberalism & Libertarianism are both based upon "liberty"; but they differ in their definitions of "liberty". Economically speaking, original Liberalism saw liberty in the free trade of the means of life (capitalism) and promoted private ownership as a legal right, while original Libertarianism saw liberty in the free access to the means of life (socialism) and promoted personal usership as a natural right.

actually, it's the other way around. The teabag states are normally the ones taking more out of the Federal government than putting in, and the blue states are normally putting in more.

Switzerland is fairly conservative in comparison to most European countries. As a progressive-liberal, I wouldn't want my own country to be anything like Switzerland.

1. It was Reagan and GWB that created huge debts when the economy was good. Please do not forget we are in a recession. Recession = less tax revenue.
2. Obama tried to end the GWB tax cuts, but was stopped by the Republicans. Less taxes = more debt
3. Much of that 7 billion is thanks to GWB, like the huge veterans befits for those that got hurt in the Iraq War.

Surely if the feds can force a state to allow free speech, it can force a state to ensure equality...

that is not the reason they refer to authoritarian regimes as Orwellian - it was because those scenarios were the basis for his fiction. it had nothing to do with his own personal beliefs.

as for your other categorizations, it only makes sense that definitions change over time to fit the context as societies evolve over time. I don't think it is an incorrect usage in our modern circumstance. you are right that few are aware of the origins.
