"Disney Girls" takes the listener back to the innocence of America in the Eisenhower era. Referencing the title subject, the Ozzie & Harriet show, and lazy Sunday afternoons sipping lemonade, it was true escapism from the turbulent early '70s. All of this is wrapped up in an almost saccharine melody, yet its well-crafted bridge chorus is quite effective. This is one of Bruce Johnston's most celebrated compositions and was subsequently covered by many artists, most notably Cass Elliot.

I was at the Puyallup Fair in Wa. state, when the BB's left their piano player, Bruce Johnston, on stage at intermission. Bruce Johnston played his composition while the audience milled around, and ate hot dogs. I listened to one of the most beautiful songs I had ever heard with piano and voice only, during the intermission commotion.I don't think at became a Beachboy arrangement until several years after that, but that arrangement is incredible, and the song is pure genius.

My last Beach Boys concert was fall '83. Dennis was out of control - he introduced “I Write The Songs” in Bruce Johnston’s solo set as being made famous by, “…that f&# Barry Manilow. “ The roadies chased and finally shooed him off the stage, very unsettling and unfunny Keystone Kops stuff. But then Bruce played “Disney Girls”, and for at least those four minutes everything was right in the world. A heartbreakingly beautiful song. Thanks for posting it. And also thank you, Mr, Johnston.
