I remember when I was 11 some very pop-centric station over here had a nightly competition where they would pit two songs against each other and then the listeners would vote for their favourite one, which would then go up against the song for the next night and so on. I think the average length of time a song usually lasted was about 3 days, if that; a lot only winning once. This song lasted for weeks. On a pop station. They actually had to retire it at some point in recognition of the feat. Nothing beat it. Now I'm not saying it's the best song in the world but that was almost unheard of for a song like that to be so popular for that demographic. Mind you, this was back when they still played a fair amount of rock music on those kinds of stations before they became the synth and autotuned infested shitholes they are now.
