I don't know about the rest of the US, but here in Maine the Pelletier Bros. and a few others run 10 foot bunks on The Golden Road. Some can collapse to be used on state highways. They buy Western Stars and Kenworths with planetary drive rearends so they will last longer.

In it's day it was probably a very nice truck and the person who drove it when it was new was probably very proud to drive it

Still working after 40 years!. i bet the original buyer never thought it would give four decades of service! . I was asked to build a set of heavy bunks when i was sawmill engineering, I used 3/8 th wall tubing, and the mill owner reckoned they took up the tare weight of two logs on their own... They would have been right at home on that truck and jinker. 😁

Why where the old Dayton style wheels so popular back then?

Id drive that truck in a second. Just put my ear plugs in and hammer down. I used to have one of those silver fuller puck shifter knobs on my 72 chev 4x4 w/a 4 spd. I had the splitter wired in to turn the fog lights on when you selected O.D. haha.

All the lichen and moss makes me think it maybe sat somewhere for a while before getting put back into service!
