Why should the fishermen in Alaska, the lumberjacks in Oregon, the ranchers in Montana, the wheat farmers in Kansas, the roughnecks in Oklahoma, the distillers in Kentucky or the coal miners in West Virginia have their tax dollars spent helping North Carolina? Again.

What happened to states rights, curbing federal intrusion and control of local affairs? What became of the Republican ideals of fighting socialism, downsizing government, fiscal responsibility and lowering the federal deficit?

Republicans, always with their hand out for a government welfare check. So much for "Just Say No".

North Carolina taxes the poor and gives to the rich. For example, in its 2025-26 fiscal year, the Tar Heel state has set aside $5 billion of public taxpayer money to give to private schools through a voucher system, undercutting its very own public schools. That $5 billion should go to Asheville, the hell with FEMA.

North Carolina is living beyond its means and has $16 billion in debt - because it spends too much and taxes corporations too little; the income tax rate on people-people in North Carolina is about 4.5% while the tax on corporate-people is only 2.5%. Raise the corporate tax rate to the people rate and send that money to western North Carolina: the hell with FEMA.

Every baby born in North Carolina is in debt, out of the womb, to the tune of about $1, 450 and it only gets worse. North Carolina is a federal welfare state with about $35.6 billion, or ~22% of its overall revenues coming from the federal government - meaning, taxpayers in other states. The hell with the federal government, North Carolina should pay its own way.

North Carolina has been controlled (legislatively) by Republicans for at least the last 15 years. Maybe it’s time for North Carolina to stop suckling off the federal teat and take some "personal" responsibility for itself, right-size its government, practice fiscal responsibility and earn its status as a sovereign state. The hell with federal strings, North Carolina needs to stand up for itself, for its residents.

North Carolina needs clean up its financial act, get out of debt, raise taxes to cover services and governmental operations or, cut services and downsize. North Carolina needs to learn to live within its means just as it expects its residents to do.

Deep in debt as it is, North Carolina currently enjoys an almost $1 billion budget surplus, and its Republican led statehouse is looking for creative ways NOT to give that money back to the federal government or to its taxpayers. The hell with Republican creative accounting, that billion dollars should go to Asheville.
