the dreaded “Gibson knot”. These are way too difficult to remove 😭. It really just takes a little bit of practice to get used to holding the string down securely as you wind the peg (and will save a lazy customer from needing a tetanus shot when they decide to change their strings 6 months later 😉)

Pull tight, pull back one fret, bend, hold flat so it wraps the bottom. Thats all you need.

I cringe every time I see this on any stringed instrument

Through hole > pull back, one wrap over top of string > bend > max wraps under. Never moves, strings come right off and other techs dont hate you down the line

Lol luthiers actually hate this way of winding strings. Just do it the normal way, tuning stability usually comes down to the nut anyway.

Works especially GREAT for the smaller / lighter gage strings. Also works quite well for the 'slippery-er' gut and NylGut strings. Been doing this technique for 65+ years.
In your next video you might want to show 'the group' how to EASILY 'break off' a newly installed metal string close to the tuning peg - as 'concertina wire' has no place on any insturment's 'fiddle (etc.) head'.

I always wrap each string once or twice around then put it through the post hole. Putting it through the post hole first always makes my strings more vulnerable to breaking.

I did that for years, but stopped when I discovered epoxy. No slippage at all.

Worked around some of the best luthiers and never saw any of them restring like this. Seen them do an over and under so it pinched the string but that was it.

Ok, I don't usually comment, but here I will. This is exactly the right way to tie a Luthier's knot. It's nice to see someone showing the correct way, but it needs follow up understanding. The whole point of this locking method is IF you tune properly, this fold locks the string onto the post tighter and tighter. And what is the correct way to tune a fixed bridge guitar you ask? You ALWAYS tug on the string and tune it UP to pitch. You NEVER loosen a string down to pitch (and just start playing) as doing this creates uneven tension along the string which ultimately makes it go flat (ie. loosening a string is NOT the opposite of tightening a string as two entirely different things happen). If you tug and tighten the string UP to pitch, the tension along the entire string remains mostly constant. Loosening a string creates unequal tensions along the string. Tightening only translates to more tuning stability. Again, this applies only to fixed bridge guitars. Guitars with a whammy require a different conversation. TIP, with the Luthier's knot, it's best to cut the tail as short as possible to aid in easy removal when the time comes.

I changed my strings for the first time a few days ago. I changed the strings on 2 guitars. I did not do any sort of knots and I was perfectly fine, just hold the string downwards while spinning the tuner

Let me show you how to skip that one important scene that would enable you to also tie it like a luthier…

I have been doing this since 1993. Common sense should prevail if toy want your guitar to stay in tune use that method. I didn’t know it had a name.

I prefer Leos safety post or Safetituners, can't remember the real name. The slotted posts with the little hole in the center. Don't need to do any of that with them, less extra string behind the lock to slowly equalize tension. Thats not the main reason. Its quick, neat, and I can take my strings on and off simply when foing work without buying a set every time with minimal effort. Just go a post ahead, cut, stick end straight down in hole to bottom out, push down to bend following the path out of slot, effectively the string bends at top of hole in slot and as it exits slot, wind quickly, done. Tune it up, then you can slack them off, lift the coil up and out. Can stick it right back on just so the post goes up the middle of the coil and the bend at the top finds the slot, the end of string drops right in hole.

This is the way I’ve been doing it for forty years. The best way…

I never string like that and I never have any slippage issues...I find it too cumbersome to remove from the post when they're strung like this and it's time to re-string...that's just me

Maybe for a Nylon string guitar. But for a dreadnought just wind the pole where the tension locks it, seems this what the luthiers say I used to to that to the B & E before

Wait until you find out that all it takes to lock a string is the bend/kink. You don't need a full wrap around the post on any of the strings.
