This excerpt is from "The Good Wife Season ”4, Episode 3.

Plot Summary:In a shocking turn of events, the university president tried to use the school's own rules to claim ownership of students' inventions and profits. According to school policy, any intellectual property created by students or staff on campus belonged to the institution. However, a fierce investigation revealed a stunning contradiction – the president’s own book royalties, generated from his personal work, hadn’t been turned over to the school.

This glaring hypocrisy became the key piece of evidence. The lawyers seized on this flaw, skillfully using it to expose the president's attempt to abuse his power. The result? A stunning legal victory that not only saved the students’ rights but also revealed the dark side of institutional greed. Don’t miss this jaw-dropping case that shows even the highest authorities can be brought down by their own deceit!

I had a calculus professor come into class on the first day with 3 notebooks. He told us that all the material for his course was on those three notebooks and as long as we had good attendance and notes we did not need to buy a book. By the end of the course we had our own book

My calculus professor was 92 years old and didn't make anyone buy a textbook because she wrote everything on the chalkboard and expected us to take notes accordingly. At the end of every lecture, I took a picture of the chalkboard and emailed the professor who emailed the photo to the entire class for our benefit. She was old, cranky, but saw the benefit of sparing us more expenses.

Lots of people are missing the point here. It wasn't about the textbook. The suit was about students whose work was claimed under the rules by the college. This bit was their lawyer pointing out that the "rules" were being enforced for those students, but not for the Chancellor, even though he should have been bound by them. Selective enforcement meant it wasn't really a rule, and the students won their claim.

"Excuse me, sir" said angrily, the man who was still seated at a court... to the court judge

"So the rules don't apply to you?"
"That's not what I said."
That's *EXACTLY* what you said.

Teachers writing a book and then requiring a student buy it for their class is utter bullshit.

That sob can't share a mere 70k and expects students to pay millions

Interesting, so students are required to buy a book and then all materials and ideas the students come up with are owned by the school? That’s very problematic, rules like that should be banned at colleges and universities, it doesn’t encourage or foster progress.

I'm shocked no one ever called that guy Chancellor Dumbo, lol.

That dude gets caught up in a strong enough wind and he'll fly away, lol

Explains why most great inventors suddenly drop out of university months before releasing their invention.

Ah yes, the most clearly justified of all objections:

Because it's devestating to my case!

Most professors these days hate the paywall of textbooks and hate the companies making them even more.

Had a teacher freak out that most of the class didn’t do an optional project over thanksgiving break so she made it mandatory and changed its weight on our grade, thus tanking half the class. Senior English is a requirement to graduate so obviously there was an issue with half the class was now failing, sobbing, etc.

Her response to this was selling popcorn or tickets to her god awful plays outside of school for extra credit. We later found out there wasn’t even a charge for students to attend the venue and she was charging 2x the price of an adult ticket. When she got mass reported admin at the school didn’t care because“she was on her way out”.

I had a macro economics professor who didn't agree with the methods colleges use to make money. He emailed everyone in the evening of the first day with a pdf containing all the relevant information we'd need to complete the course.

The college thinking they own any works of anybody there is absolutely ridiculous. They don't own shit. And Any teacher that writes a book and tries to make it required for the class should probably be fired unless the entire class is specifically about them and their book and students know that going into it.

Our biology teacher would painstakingly create detailed summaries of her lessons into neat outlines with small but legible handwritten texts so as to save pages. She would lend that copy to us so we can scan it and we wouldn't have to buy expensive textbooks. I still remember her lessons. What a great and dedicated teacher she was.

My college professors sent out emails to everyone as soon as they could with links to free or discounted copies of the necessary book for their class.

That’s a bro move.

My sister tells such amazing stories of her Uni lecturer, a man who so hated the way Uni Textbooks were sold for such high prices that he pirated the books every year for his students. My sister asked him if he ever got in trouble, and he said "no, but to be fair, I wrote the damn book for them anyway so if I want to pirate my own work I damn well will."
