I purchased my first handgun years ago. The primary purpose was for home defense. The best advice from the shop, the local police supply, was to add a light over a laser. It wasn't up-selling. It provided me with the solution to the problem I wanted to solve. It lights up dark rooms and the vast desert scene of our surrounding property.

When I was trained in tactical entries, they taught us to hold the flashlight up and away from our center mass. Thus, if someone did shoot at the light, they might, if lucky, hit your hand or wrist. Not pleasant but also not lethal.

A flashlight DOES reveal your position, but it’s multiple benefits outweigh its drawbacks.

I had 2 schools of thought.

1) let's them know you're there. Gives away position. But if you can blind them, like in the video....

2) Given the situation it's a trade off: you possibly give away your position but you need to SEE your target ( don't want to hit a family member, ect ) . If you can SEE your target, you IDENTIFY said target and avoid shooting the wrong target and all the implications that come with that.

Personally, I'd rather see my target than fire blindly into a dark area without knowing what's there.

Blinding the target puts the whole notion of giving away your position to rest. He can't see, you didn't give away your position..

This argument only works if there is only one badguy .. it will give your position away to those the weapon is not pointing at.

Ken said “when was the last time you needed that light on your gun”. I’d counter with “when did anyone last need their gun? We carry it because we MAY need it and it pays to be prepared”. Weapon lights can blind or intimidate opponents and in every case, light is important to be able to ID your potential targets before you pull the trigger and change your life or the lives of your potential targets. No one should be firing wildly at sounds in low light conditions because you can’t reasonably argue self defense in that case. It’s negligent and dangerous. Get a light and know what you’re shooting at before you pull the trigger
