Welcome to The Athletic FC's YouTube channel, where best-in-class journalism meets video.

Is it possible to survive in the Premier League with a possession-based style of play? Or, has Russell Martin's Southampton, Vincent Kompany's Burnley, and Ruud van Nistlerooy's Leicester proven it's impossible?

Alex Barker takes a look 🧠

What approach would you take in charge of a promoted team?

Promoted clubs should just adopt the Gatefe model

But Ipswich town dont hold the ball quite alot and yet they’ll get relegated.

I think it is more about the quality of the players. Any style works if you have the players

Teams should build their squad a year in advance if possible and look to just play physically, like Getafe as someone commented here. Also a good GK is crucial, cause you won’t stop teams from shooting but a good GK will stop 35% from going in, and that’s a few points gained.

The problem is that getting promoted from the dog-fight that is the championship needs the team to be attacking and passing-based. Any manager who’s so good at that style of coaching and tactics will simply not be very good at 442 ‘keep it tight and nick one’.
Martin’s Southampton are a perfect example - they won promotion BECAUSE of that style. Then after a few successful high-presses resulted in goals conceded the fans turned.

The gap in wealth is just too big. Squads in the premier league have premier league quality players in every position and next season will have another 120m to spend on further improving the squad depth meanwhile the promoted teams have championship quality players and have to use that 120m to bring in first team players in those positions just to have a chance to match the quality of bench players in established prem sides

Just play hoofball until you can sign better players. Will save you the trouble.

Just defend and counter all day, survive multiple seasons and use that income to buy good players. Each season's profit is enormous

Its why I think Burnley have the best chance of staying up assuming they manage to keep the same style. They could conceed 4x as many goals and they'd still have had a better defensive record than 17th in the prem this season.

As an Ipswich fan and ST holder, the thing that has surprised me the most about the premier league is the athleticism of the 17 ahead of us. Streets ahead of us.

We have been more pragmatic as the season has gone on and been less effective in games. Although we have had a lot of injuries and a squad where many of the players played in League one.

I dont think it matters what style we play. The gap is just too big.

You can do it. But as my Fulham have shown, it is all about adaptability and getting a few key signings. Kinda helped we went down with a good striker in mitrovic, some decent full backs and then bought two very good CMs in Andreas and Palhinha, as well as Willian to add that extra quality on the wings. They bolstered what would have been a struggling side into a solid mid table one. But ultimately it is about playing pragmatic when you need to, as we have shown especially this season with the quality of some of our counters

"Can promoted teams survive in the Premier League?" If the money was distributed fairly beforehand, maybe

Brentford switches as needed, I would say they play a bit of everything depending on opponent. Frank is highly adaptive and pragmatic, whatever suits the day ... that´s what is played.

The one place where I disagree is that it's a duller approach. Counter-attacking football can be beautiful (lifelong Forest fan here)

Premier League should allow old teams to spend as much as the highest earner. Promoted teams don't have the same revenue as Premier League teams. So they're at a disadvantage before they even enter the league
