We've decided to turn our kitchen dining room area into a more cozy and casual breakfast nook. I've always wanted to try my hand at DIYing a custom (semi) built in dining bench, so I used some inexpensive IKEA refrigerator cabinets to make one for our new breakfast nook. I love how it turned out & I'm sharing the how to here!

Suggestions: Cut the 2x4 to shorter lengths so that the cabinets have a slight overhang above the base, particularly in the front to form a toe kick. Cover the exposed 2x4 with baseboard. Cut a rectangle of plywood for the top of the bench as IKEA's pressboard construction sags under weight and with time. Add casters or furniture gliders to the bottom of the bench. Add bumpers to the back of the unit to protect your walls. If you are machine sewing a seat cushion cover, use an iron to press the seams smooth after stitching.

I really needed this easy, step by step video! Remodeling a basement into a sort of mother in law suite and looking for projects I can actually do without feeling overwhelmed…so thank you lol!!

They have a smaller toybox in the kid's section that's very sturdy and ideal for a bench project. Instead of handsewing just glue velcro on the 2 seams and have a washable cover. It allows you to use the foam again and not waisting it when the cover is dirty.
Put some velcro on the plank in between the matress and the bench if u don't want the cushion to glide off.

I anticipate a kitchen remodel this summer. If we take down a row of 4 short upper cabinets in this work, i would like to repurpose them as a storage unit for the living room or under family room TV.

I’ve been thinking of making a banquette for my new house too. It would be an L shape with pillows. I just wonder how often my littles would toss a pillow in their cereal bowl or spaghetti plate? Still, what a neat way to do lots of seating in such a cozy way!

I like this. I would really like to change our formal dining room, but I am struggling with designs. This gives me more options.

Beautiful!! How much weight can those cabinets take on them with people sitting? Have you had any breaking or giving happen?

This is a great idea. However, i would some separator/support in the middle of each cabinet door. After a few months of sitting on the cabinet it will sag and the doors will look out of place.
