This does work with all pets but they make extra sounds that will cause players to be able to tell that it's not a player if they are close enough to hear the animal sounds!

My cat in sea of thieves would always make a scared meow and i never knew why i did that until a kraken spawned i now know to listen for your pets cries and actions when dangers around

You can name your pet Cannonball then put it in the cannon on an enemy ship and they will think theres a cannonball in it

They also react to danger before any audio or visual warnings (kraken, megalodon, skeleton ship, etc.). It doesn't really give you any advantage, but could probably help someone who's hard of hearing and can't pick up the audio warnings while they're below deck.

I only own the monkey, so I can only describe what he does. He basically just covers his head and shakes a bit like he's scared or bracing for something.

Animals will also give audio/visual cues when you’re about to be attacked by meg/krackens, way before the music starts to play as well, and before you get inked too.

Pets are the biggest way to knife yourself in the game. So many times in the middle of battles and me trying to run around and suddenly have to make a quick turn.... but grab the monkey instead of the wheel... ... so many times. Even when trying to grab cannon balls or trying to get supply from boxes the pets are there and you pick them up.

We do this alot. My cat is specifically named cannonball. It is a ashen cat so it looks kinda similar

There's this, also as people have pointed out, they react to danger, but they also react to people who look at them through a spyglass too

I feel like a really good defensive maneuver would be to have yourself and a crewmate each fire your pet, then one of you... Make the enemy think that you're a sloop that's got another player helping them 😂
