--►Lercher is a type of dog that is obtained by crossing a greyhound with any other breed of dog. Usually, herding dogs or terriers are used for these purposes, depending on the wishes of the breeder. The most popular are collie and greyhound hybrids. Such dogs turn out to be smarter and faster, which is especially appreciated by hunters. During her reign, Elizabeth I forbade ordinary people to have greyhounds, which led to the appearance of dogs - a cross between greyhounds with other breeds, in order to get around this prohibition. Over time, hunters noticed that the resulting hybrid breeds of dogs are even more suitable for hunting, successfully combining intelligence and speed.

Such an underrated dog in many parts of the world, I think. We wanted a medium-sized dog for our farm in Southern Australia (we already had 2 small dogs) with the ability to protect the flock through the day, but be relaxed and hang indoors at night, without the wanderlust of many working and herding dogs. We chose a whippet x Australian kelpie for the job and he's brilliant. And fast. Really fast. His job is to eradicate introduced pets like rats, rabbits, hares and foxes on the property and to see off hawks and ravens around the poultry. He knows which birds are OK and which ones to banish. Loves kids, great with other dogs and always the peacemaker if any other animals aren't getting along. A truly excellent family dog.

Bedlington whippet. Lovely dog. Also have a bull whippet, and another Beddie whippet who's fathers side was actually 100% golden retriever. Part lurcher, part sofa, the lot of them.

Are you actually saying I have a lurcher? She is a mix from podenco, a sight hound, and a Spanish terrier.

We have a lurcher. She’s 50%grey hound, 12.5% whippet, 12.5% saluki, 12.5% pitbull terrier and 12.5% terrier. She is smooth coated, slender and just a little taller than our Labrador! She’s quick, loyal, loving and very clever. Just a great dog all round. Long dogs tend to be sighthound crosses only, in the uk, and don’t have any other terrier or working dog crossed in. 😊

Its hunts, jumps, retrieves also they can happily live in small places as they were kept out of the way in days gone by an brought out at night to catch meat for the pot.
The dog most shown was a bedlington terrier cross greyhound not a collie.

A lurcher is the actual greyhound itself. When the rich challenged two greyhounds against the hare, they were looking for the fastest dog. Every now and then a greyhound would come along that stayed behind the lead dog deliberately, because he or she knew that the lead dog was going to tire the hare, and when the hare turned, the second dog would lurch to the left or right and pick up the hare. The owners of these dogs did not want them, and called them rotten lurchers, they wanted the speed dog, basically because the lurcher greyhound showed more intelligence than most dogs. The same problem occurred with the whippet. They gave these lurcher greyhounds and lurcher whippets away to the drovers and they in turn crossed them with a dog called the "smithfield". The whippet cross was called a "warren dog", and the greyhound cross was called a "longdog". These fed the drovers with wild game all the way to London, sometimes a couple of hundred miles, and back home again, they were greatly valued. When transport by train came to this country for anything on the hoof, the drovers took their "smithfields" with them to Australia, and in the south of Australia around Tasmania is the only place you will find the "smithfield" now and they are greatly valued. Over the years we have bastardised the language and now anything that looks like a poachers dog is called a lurcher, which is completely wrong. The kennel club also helped all this to happen by refusing to recognise the "smithfield" as a true breed. They were fearless and kept hardened cattle moving all day and everyday. This is the truth of it and it needs to be told correctly. Anything else is just a mongrel. I am now 72 years old and i know all this because it is an educational story passed down through the family, Some of us were drovers, some of us were Romany, and some of us were just bad buggers.

Lurchers can live in small spaces an keep quiet as they were originally bred to poach game for the common man when only the king an royals were allowed to hunt .
They need little exercise compared to their looks an can an did keep a lot of families fed threw hard times, in fact mine still do as have allowes been brought up with them.
Only dog that can bare the name in my opinion

Got to correct some of this - a lurcher is any dog crossed with a SIGHThound - included in which is a greyhound/whippet etc Lurcher's are common
in Kent and the North as well as other areas in UK. Lurcher's come in smooth or rough coated.
