I’ve never been more grateful for not being trendy. The only thing I would definitely do if I had a bigger kitchen is different worktop colours and/or materials. But as my kitchen isn’t huge in my current refit I’m going all with quartz to keep it looking spacious. I’ve also chosen wood units to future proof, as I can repaint it if I want a different colour scheme over the years. I have nothing against bold statements but as it’s such an expensive investment, I lean towards classic and timeless, like the little black dress or a well tailored blazer.

The edging band countertop detail trend gives me a chuckle. Lived with an 80s kitchen for more than 30 years. Countertop was white laminate with a wood edge to match the builder grade oak cabinets. The current trend is more refined and has higher end materials, but basically the same idea. Maybe I should have kept the look when we did our reno. 😁

Oh, Mark...sigh...if you think open shelving is hard to keep clean, wait until you try rough hewn stone! Although the texture does LOOK great. The only look I didn't care for was the agate? looking counter and front at the beginning. Just that particular pattern; it seemed a little 'loud' to me. The idea of using the same material for both is attractive. As always, I enjoy your ideas and the way you present them. Thanks!

I was born in 1959, so grew up in the 60's and 70's. My family had a laminate countertop. Back then laminate was not as nice as it is today. But, it seems that laminate has some kind of stigma attached to it. I don't why. Given how tight most families' budgets are these days, the nicer laminates seem to make sense.

I’d have to say the first picture is a fine example of people who have more money than taste! 😂

We are building soon, and I’ve watched you so much for ideas! But, things cost so much, I believe, I’m going with the cheapest choice out there on counter tops! Ppl have used laminate for years without issues, including myself! And, I can stand it for another 20 years.

Sometimes luxury, high-end trends lack refinement.

Interesting! I like the idea of making my countertop look thicker by using an attached wider edge. Love how much fun people can have with their kitchen.

I matched my kitchen cabinets and countertops just like the first trend. Mine are both white.

These trends are short-lived, IMO. They seriously lack the “wow” factor.

For me, never marble. I grew up in France, marble is for mausoleums, not homes. Granite- I can never tell if they are clean- too many spots. Tile served of well - only chipped after20 years and heat resistant. I do the love the look of quartz tops.

All very interesting ideas - but with the continual rising cost of materials and labour it is so very important to PLAN your needs and wants in as much detail as possible (actively knowing that no matter how much you plan THINGS HAPPEN...) so that everything flows together as to functionality and aesthetics. You can do!!!

Trends, invented by business owners/corporations to separate the wealthy (or poor decision makers) from their money. A trendy kitchen may not appeal to others when you go to sell, and will look dated in 20 years (or less). So unless you have money to burn, stick with simple, classic styles and materials and get your “trendiness” from paint color and furnishings.
Having said that, however, I make my living off of individuals who can afford to use Architectural Digest for their inspiration. As we say (somewhat tongue-in-cheek) in the construction industry, “it’s only time and money”.
