The 'Ultimate' Guide | How Overwatch Ultimates Actually Work

In this video we deep-dive into how the ultimate charge mechanic actually works in Overwatch. We go over the 3 ways in which ultimate charge is generated and the technical nuances of each source. Then we briefly look over the ultimate charge of a couple Overwatch heroes, highlighting a few insights that stood out.

Soldier can technically gain around 50% of his ultimate if his entire team is in his healing pad for the full duration (as long as all need 200+ healing, aka if team is stuck in a graviton he can get 50%). That's why his ult charge is so high.

The thing that makes balancing ult charge complicated though is just how much of the applicable charging actions each character does in comparison to the power of the ultimate. The perfect example of this is Graviton Surge vs Whole Hog; despite Whole Hog generally being considered a rather cheap ultimate, it actually has a higher ult charge requirement than Graviton Surge, which is widely considered one of the most expensive ultimates in the game. This is the case, however, because Roadhog has both much more damage per second on average than Zarya, and because Roadhog has the ability to heal himself for 300 health every 8 seconds

So Mercy's Damage boost doesn't gain her any ult charge?

I think part of the reason why junk rat and Pharoah's ult charges faster than soldiers is because of their lack of mobility in them which make them vulnerable thus making them use it risky, the reason why soldiers is super high is because his ult is low risk but with the splash damage of helix can charge relatively fast

For Lucio you can't generate ultimate charge for 2 or 3secondes after the end off tour ultimate
