he's a counter tenor, they're pretty rare and they almost have the vocal colour and pitch range of a castrato. the female parts in this madrigal were originally written for castrati- as far as i know women weren't allowed on stage yet in the 16th century

Wonderful. The singing is great across the board! Acting-wise, the guy second from right saves the theatrical aspect of this rendition from what I would find squeamish-making cutesiness were it not for his presence. He contributes the theatrical je ne sais quoi that matters. (Your mileage may vary vis-a-vis what you find squeamish in "funny" classical ensemble singing. Too often, I find it precious and corny. I imagine a good theater coach would help in many such cases.)
