Here's more context : The evil doctor is a scientist that fight against Vader to take his place and become Palpatine's apprentice (he was really deceided from Vader at that moment) and the rancor isn't just upgraded, he's immune to pain.

The Rancor was modified to not feel pain so it would be different for him fighting the monster in ROTJ since it would be more afraid of the Sith.
