Ijexa is one of the rhythms played in our regular "Afro Diaspora Rhythm" classes, where we study and research different rythms from the Afro Diaspora in Brazil. The class is instructed by the teacher Biano Lima at the Percussion Art Centre (PAC) in Berlin. The content of this video is fr didatic purposes.

Ijexá is a traditional rhythm present foremost in the Afoxés, which go out on the street parades during carnaval. It is an afro-brazilian manifestation with Yoruba roots. In general, the Afoxé members belong to candomle temples.
Within the candomble, the ijexa rythm is essentially played for the following Orixas (gods of the nature) Oxum, Osain, Ogum, Logum-edé, Exu, Oba, Oyá-Yansan e Oxalá. However in its instrumental version (without chants) it is dedicated to Oxum.

It is a soft rhythm with beats and cadences of great beauty in sound and dance. Ijexa is played exclusively with the hands and is always accompanied by the Ga (Agogo), which marks the time. Further instruments are:
- Atabaque small ( Le' )
- Atabaque medium ( Rumpi )
- Atabaque big ( Rum )
- Agbe ( Cabassa )
