How to Change the Size of a Composition in After Effects (Resize a Comp)

An After Effects composition is the canvas that the video layers sit on. If a video is larger than the composition then only a portion of the video will be seen. When this occurs there are two options, resizing the comp, or resizing the video. Resizing the video will lower the resolution and isn’t the optimal choice. The better option is to change the size of the composition through the settings.

In the composition settings, you can change the size to better fit the videos or resolution that you want. By default the resolution of the composition will be linked, meaning the aspect ratio will remain constant when one of the resolution values is changed. This is helpful if you are resizing the composition to a bigger or smaller resolution of the same aspect ratio. If you plan to resize the composition to a new aspect ratio then you will need to uncheck the link icon.

When you resize a composition all of the layers will remain the same size. If you have already started an edit then you may need to resize the layers to fit the new resolution. Depending on the effects used you may also need to adjust settings to suit the new resolution of the comp.
