NASA | What is a Pulsar?

Показать описание
A pulsar is a neutron star that emits beams of radiation that sweep through Earth's line of sight. Like a black hole, it is an endpoint to stellar evolution. The "pulses" of high-energy radiation we see from a pulsar are due to a misalignment of the neutron star's rotation axis and its magnetic axis. Pulsars seem to pulse from our perspective because the rotation of the neutron star causes the beam of radiation generated within the magnetic field to sweep in and out of our line of sight with a regular period, somewhat like the beam of light from a lighthouse. The stream of light is, in reality, continuous, but to a distant observer, it seems to wink on and off at regular intervals.

Pulsars are the original gamma-ray astronomy point sources. A few years after the discovery of pulsars by radio astronomers, the Crab and Vela pulsars were detected at gamma-ray energies. Pulsars accelerate particles to tremendous energies in their magnetospheres. These particles are ultimately responsible for the gamma-ray emission seen from pulsars.

In this video, gamma rays are shown in magenta. Data from NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope indicate that most of the gamma rays emitted by a pulsar arise from far above the pulsar's surface.

I worked at NASA Goddard for 11 years and it was fascinating. I have never worked with more educated, sophisticated and focused people. It was a privilege.

1 teaspoon = Weight of Mt. Everest

Now that's unfathomable.

keep up the educational videos, NASA!

An object made of neutron star the size of a matchbox weighs roughly 3 billion tons
(Although we cant weigh them, it’s a theory)

I wanna see a pulsar fight a black hole.

Pulsating Stars (pulsars) are one of my favorite subjects in our universe. Does anyone know of any documentaries on pulsars? I've seen History Channel's universe documentary already!

Pulsar the neutron star with more mass in small size???Wait, that's incredible.

Wow that's a great video for people who don't know what a pulsar is

These are mentioned in Quran as Tariq. Amazing how Quran mentioned it 1400+ years ago!

Actually, a Pulsar; and other pulsating emission star, is a star that functions as a "Battery" to the galaxy it is located in. The surrounding stars have a differential; and unstable, gravitational field. When the stars begin to deenergize, they create an electromagnetic attraction to attempt to restabilize. The pulsating star is extremely energetic; and, creates sufficient energy to pulse out energy to restabilize the surrounding stars. THe pulses are are sequenced accordingly to the rate of gravitational energy lossage by the stars.

I saw a star the other night just like this with my eye. I had a theory, which was that the star was so far, hence why it was so small, making the photons that hit my eye extremely limited, causing the constant pulsing.

I've never been so glad to be proven wrong. This is much cooler.

I swear by Heaven and the Tariq ( The Knocker ) ! And what will convey to you what the Tariq is? The Star Piercing the darkness. (The Holy Quran)
The word "Tarek" and the word "Al-thakeb" are two different Arabic words that are used in the above-mentioned verse to describe the Pulsar, the word Al-tarek means in English " the Knocker" or "that beats quickly". The word "Al-thakeb" means " piercing ", these two characteristics ( knocker and piercing ) are one of the most specific features of a pulsar

It's a good phenomenological explanation with first rate visual imagery.  It treating the subject like David Attenborough observing wildebeest on the savannah.  There's important fundamental physics going on these objects and I'd expect NASA to provide links to more depth.  Why does it emit x-rays?   Why does it emit any radiation at all?

The pulsar star was mentioned in the Qur'an in more than 1, 400 years earlier

Mentioned 1400 Years ago in the Holy Quran

Quran Surah 86 Verse 1-3
By the heaven, and At-Tariq (the night-comer, i.e. the bright star)
And what will make you to know what At-Tariq (night-comer) is?
(It is) the star of piercing brightness

Research what the word Tariq in Arabic means, the name given by Allah(God) for this Star, you will find clear proof.
