Remember guys. Putting Mentos in fizzy drinks is not a chemical reaction. It's due to the Mentos having a rough outer layer that separates out the carbon from the drink and it becomes explosive due to it being forced out of a small opening while having a lot of pressure on it. You could re create a mentos out of metal and it will still work. A chemical reaction is different. And yes mentos are rough, it's just really small.

Edit: did not know it would get this populair so I will continue the explanation.
For the first test I used mentos, jelly beans, gummy bears and other sweats with some of them also having arabic sugar coating. The Mentos as you know did it's thing but the jellybeans, gummy bears an dither sweets all created just a tiny fountain some of them with Arabic sugar coating only making foam that went over the edges,
This disproves that a lot of the foam comes from sugar and sugar coating (conclusion: no the foam doe snot get created by sugar, but seriously guys there is sugar in the drink)
Conclusion2: (while arabic sugar coating does something it is not as much as expected but still something)

For the second test I used rough sand. The rough sand made a fountain higher than normal mentos would (surprised me too)
Conclusion: (the foaming of the cola is created by carbon dioxide escaping the water because it got separated from the fluid)

To explain this physical reacting it's easy, there is carbon dioxide in the drink and like gasses do it wants to escape but it can't due to surface tension, (sometimes you do see some small carbon dioxide particles escape) what happens when you put a mentor in is that the carbon dioxide will form on the candy just like it forms on the sides on a glass. After the carbon dioxide is formed it will race tot he top as the candy can't hold on to the carbon dioxide, it also happens with sand, there comes a surface the carbon dioxide can form on. It also depends on how much carbon dioxide is in a drink, for example: sparkling water does not create such a effect as coke, Fanta or sprite due to it having less carbon dioxide.

The PH does not really help the reaction but a little bit. By creating a tiny amount of more surface for the carbon dioxide to form on

An because you guys don't know the difference between chemical and physical reactions. Let me take you back to first grade science class.
A chemical reaction is a reaction that is irreversible and ofter produces energie or transforms the properties of the compound you used. For example burning wood. It becomes ash and can't become wood again. A physical reaction on the other hand is reversible like freezing water and letting it cool of. Or by carbonating a drink you can easily remove the carbon dioxide from the drink and also put it back. And the Mentos don't change the properties and nature of the cola and thus it's a physical reaction.

Final conclusion: while putting Mentos in cola is a physical and a small chemical reaction. The same effect can be created without the need of a chemical reaction.

For your information, the foaming thing in the first clip is called elephant toothpaste and it’s a chemical reaction that makes it happen, not Fanta and mentos
