President Trump says he's 'all for masks'

My home country is Jamaica. It's in the Caribbean, Central America, directly below Cuba and directly above Colombia. It's considered a middle income country, (no longer a 3rd world country but developing.) Our annual GDP average is less than 1%. Yet, here, we have universal healthcare that's free to all citizens. The only draw back to that may be some long lines but everyone gets through at the end of the day.

Jamaica is also one of the Caribbean's #1 vacation destination. We depend on it but at the first inkling of the coronavirus, the government shutdown the nation and procured PPE's (which the USA blocked, because after sending millions of pounds of PPE's to China, the USA realized they didn't have enough), mandated masks and put curfews in place. Stores changed their hours, started giving away free masks and sanitizers and more or less conformed to the stringent rules, as hard as they were. But guess what? No marches in the streets about wanting haircuts and steaks. The Prime Minister (our President) who I disagree with on a lot of policy issues listened to his health experts and put plans in place. he let the health professionals speak and got out of their way once he had said his piece, and the nation overall complied. He has led by example, and wears a mask everywhere, as do the rest of our government. He has been a leader as far as his coronavirus response is concerned. Had a few people that didn't but that's less than a 100th of 1% of the nation.

So now what are our stats? 702 people infected, of which 553 have recovered and 10 deaths . In Jamaica, we treat those 10 deaths as if it were a 3rd of the population that died, that is, we take it seriously.

And apart from that? No one is going homeless, no landlords kicking down doors and dragging people to court for rent. No ripping healthcare away from millions. No public mask shaming, as everyone is wearing a mask, save except for the mentally ill that roam the streets, and it's not for a lack of trying.

So if a country like Jamaica can get with it, why can't the apparently "richest country on earth" and the apparent "leader of the free world" do better?
