everyone saying "just do it." You are missing the point. A lot of the time it is about feeling safe.

Plus literally half of the world still doesn’t allow gay marriage. We fight for our people who still aren’t free.

I was in a relationship with this girl and everything was perfect, I never wanted it to change. But people were such a problem, so much that she ended it because of the pressure of simply being us in public.

and it's 2023 too, the stares don't bother me, but the possibility of real violence does

My 21yr old niece and I held hands once in public just out of affection. Literally had some men looking very angrily like they wanted to hurt us, they were bristling with hatred. It was scary and I made my niece link my arm instead as I was afraid for our safety.

I am uncomfortable with displays of excessive affection in public with your partner. But that's my problem.
I'm not going to go down the street telling every couple I see to stop eating their mouths because it makes me uncomfortable. I have eyes, I know how to use them, so I just don't look at them and mind my own business.

As a straight dude, lemme at the people making y'all uncomfortable. Love is love.

The homophobic comments in the comment section are weird and stupid. They need to find a hobby.

To the homophobes, transphobes, and queerphobes of all types.
To quote David Lynch, "Fix your hearts or die. "

while i don’t agree with the whole lgbtq, in the end you two are still human beings and deserve to feel safe and comfortable in public. i’m so sorry society has made you feel like this :(

As a queer woman myself, I have learned that internal acceptance is more important than stares of others whom I don't care about anyway. If they're uncomfortable, that is THEIR problem. This only applies if it is safe to be queer without real violence or legal repercussions. Bigoted people who are unable to accept that non-straight people exist can kick rocks 😂

I'm straight, and I don't hesitate to do this with any friend. I don't care about your sexual preference, it's fun and makes us laugh. That's all that matters.

As a very visibly queer lesbian (who even grew up in a conservative environment) even I legit did not realize how much of a problem homophobia still was until I got into a relationship. I'm currently in the "slowly meeting our new neighbors and hoping to god they're accepting or at least keep their homophobia to themselves" part of moving in with my girlfriend and it's terrifying. I hate that we have to worry about this.

I'm sorry these other commenters don't understand how it feels to look queer in public, the subtle staring and somtimes overt harassment which pressures you to just keep it hidden. We may have come a long way with lgbtq+ rights (which some groups are working very hard to undo), but the everyday biases are still a very real obstacle

I have been with my girl for 22 yrs. Hooked up at 18. To this day it is still instinct to call her my roommate to certain people.

My ex if from California and moved here (Red state) and we had so many arguments about this because she would be all over me in public and I'd be like "you can't do that here." I'd get uncomfortable and leave if the male / female ratio was too skewed and she would be mad that her evening was basically ruined it sucked. If youre gay and for whatever unholy reason move to a red state, please be patient and understanding of this. If a local tells you you're not safe please listen to them. Pay attention to your surroundings and don't assume every guy around you is tolerant you can get in a lot of trouble. That rainbow sign on the door to the club will not stop them.
