Serra

Richard Serra creates monumental sculptures from forged steel. The weight, texture and shapes of his work define new spaces and experiences for visitors. Ironically, one of the main qualities of these sculptures, their weight, must be taken on faith by visitors. We are not allowed to touch these sculptures or attempt to move them. We are simply told that they are very heavy. I have extrapolated 3D meshes from short video clips of Serra's sculptures. I have transformed the works into hollow surfaces that the viewer fluidly experiences from inside and out. The mass is dissolved into space.I have paired this video work with a solo guitar track of mine. The sound is generated by rubbing chalk on guitar strings. Like the video and the sculptures, the audio is about physical surfaces and physical texture that the audience experiences in a non-tactile medium.
